Unfortunate choice of words. I understand what he was trying to say, but sadly that’ll be lost in the false outrage. Even his critics own numbers still bear out his basic point: Rapes are rare and pregnancies due to rape are rarer still. The fact is that abortions performed due to rape are statistially miniscule numbers when compared to the greater story of all abortions. We should be so lucky that the issue of abortion were only about those performed on rape victims. But it’s not.
He needs to step aside. This is a sure-fire pickup for the GOP, and we need a candidate to just stay away from the cameras and pick up the seat.
People aren’t outraged by his saying that pregnancies due to rape are rare.
They’re outraged by him saying that if a woman is “legitimately” raped her body will prevent her from getting pregnant (with the obvious implication that if you get pregnant from a rape, you’re probably lying about being raped).
And I think Akin meant everything he said.
