Quayle spelled it -oe and caught hell for it.

As it turns out, EITHER spelling is technically correct, although -oe fell out of common usage about 20 years ago.

A “teacher” gave Quayle a cue card with the word misspelled. A #ing childish move from the spawn of Carter.
