I live nearby Hempstead and have driven through it a few times recently. There are good areas but many more bad areas.

I live nearby Hempstead and have driven through it a few times recently.
I grew up in West Hempstead, 50s and 60s and each time we went into Hempstead via bus (usually to the Calderone Theater), it was one thing or another.
Even more so when we walked.
