PICKET: Ryan's generation x-cellent
The Washington Times Water Cooler ^ | 8/11/12 | Kerry Picket

Posted on 08/11/2012 7:10:18 PM PDT by paltz

Born in 1970, Republican Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan is the first generation X’er to be on a national ticket. Since the 1990’s my fellow generation Xer’s have been an often overlooked group of individuals compared to the older and much larger generation of baby boomers and the World War II generation.

We’ve been called slackers, baby busters, cynical, skeptical, angry and indifferent among other descriptions. However, is this really the case now? Forty percent of generation X’ers are from families whose parents divorced. Many became known as “latch key children.”

The Bergen County Record reported in 1995:

More than any other generation, this one is skeptical and questioning, according to Raines and others. Unlike those who grew up in the Fifties and Sixties and were weaned on Donna Reed in the kitchen or even on the quasi-traditional lifestyle of "The Brady Bunch," twentysomethings have been exposed to diverse media images and role models, researchers say.

This generation questions authority, and itself.

At age 16, Paul Ryan lost his father, when his dad died at age 55 from a heart attack. Mr. Ryan obviously knows what it was like to grow up quickly and become independent.

That doesn’t mean anything, it was the last year of the 1960s and Boomer Sarah Palin was 5 years old and the oldest boomer was 24.

Now which generation fits that age group for 2009?

Did anyone even notice the 5-24 year olds of 2009 as being important or significant for anything besides their music, or other things that kids do? The generation that was age 5 to 24 in 2009 will never be seen as the congress, president, senate, state legislatures, mayors, supreme court, the military establishment, the news media, Hollywood, the book publishing industry, the university leadership, and everything else of the adult world of their time, they will not even be associated with the 2000s except in regards to kids pop culture and such, but not the running of the nation and it’s institutions.

Ronald Reagan was the first president that all the boomers could vote for, that was the in 1984 election, he was their president as they were emerging into society and adulthood they were the last great military generation, their service approaches 10,000,000, boomers filled his military ranks, it was boomers that filled the ranks of the Airborne Rangers parachuting in to take Grenada. In 1980, boomers filled all of the colleges.

In 1980 boomers ranged from age 15 to 34, still too young to be leading America, but during the next 8 years they would start making their way into leadership as management, congressmen, administrators, judges, Mayors and so on, which is the natural emergence of a generation as it starts taking over the reigns of power and leadership.

The boomers today are the generation being replaced, since they are at the natural prime of true power, age 47-66.
They are well on their way to being replaced by the generation that followed them, like the 41 year old Paul Ryan.

My point is, that the next 30 years won’t be nearly as good for conservatives as the era of 1980-2010, which was the last effective attempt to roll back the radical lefts takeover of America from the 1930s to the late 1970s, although that was impossible, because the left made too many permanent, poison bullet changes that sealed the future and could never be undone, nonetheless, that era will someday be remembered for many incredible victories, like welfare reform and resurrecting the Second Amendment.

We will continue to win some, but at the end of this next 30 years, 1980 to 2010 (or 2020) will become a period seen
as the great resurgence of conservatism in America, as strange as that may sound right now, as we are having to live through this mess, history will see it differently when they look at the chart of the successful, radical, powerful, enduring gains by the left over the period of the 1930s through the 2040s, and the graph reveals the slump of big bomb legislation, and even some substantial retreats that the left suffered during those decades.

Boomers came of age in the late 60s, my parents are boomers and both recently retired. Sadly, my dad sounds like an MSNBC parrot.

Not really, Sarah Palin for instance, born in 1964, and Obama born in 1961, or a boomer born in 1954 or 1958, could not be said to be coming of age in the 1960s.

Perhaps your error in judgment is lumping 1964 into the Baby Boom.

1964 is a boomer year, gen X starts in 1965.

http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/facts_for_features_special_editions/cb06-ffse01-2.html "In 2006, the oldest of the baby boomers, the generation born between 1946 and 1964, will turn 60 years old. Among the Americans celebrating their 60th will be our two most recent presidents, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Other well-known celebrities reaching this milestone include Cher, Donald Trump, Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton. To commemorate this occasion, the Census Bureau has compiled a collection of facts relating to, perhaps, our most celebrated generation."

I can show you crap on the internet that says Gen-X starts in 1966 and even 1967.

General consensus is somewhere between 1962-1964 and ending around 1980.

Yes, you can find all kinds of”crap” on the internet, a vast collection of various individual definitions and niche definitions, if there is no definition, then there is no discussion, you are right about Gen X though, it isn’t well defined yet, but boomer is.

As you can see, the most accepted definition of boomer is the government’s, 1946-1964, it is the one used in all real discussion of the generation by the census bureau, congress, the GAO, and the large elements of the private sector that need to use a definition that agrees with all of the massive governmental agencies and policies, and research and data collection, Gen X seems to be less pinned down, but boomers are very well defined.

The boom had stopped booming. Where you slice the "beginning" of the "bust" is open to interpretation.

You refuse to call 18-year olds and even 35 year olds adults. You slice it at 1984 before "the Baby Boom came of age".

I guess the 1970s were all a bad dream.

Argue with the government and society at large if you want to redefine boomer, don’t waste my time with your nonsense.

You are the one spinning Boomers as not reaching adulthood into 1984. Gen-X was already reaching adulthood then.

You spin that the Baby Boom lasted until December 1964. I’ve heard it reported as 1962 since 1992.

Buh Bye from one of Gen-Reagan.

Here is what I said, I was not saying that none of them became adults until 1984, I was trying to say that the generation was emerging into power and it's place in society and leadership, although many did literally reach adulthood under Reagan.

“Ronald Reagan was the first president that all the boomers could vote for, that was the in 1984 election, he was their president as they were emerging into society and adulthood they were the last great military generation, their service approaches 10,000,000, boomers filled his military ranks, it was boomers that filled the ranks of the Airborne Rangers parachuting in to take Grenada.
