I disagree with you most of the time, but that is a pretty fair point.
Romney's Mormonism doesn't matter and isn't worth talking about, but suddenly Ryan's Catholicism not only matters but is being heralded as a great asset.
It's just politics is all. The truth is that partisan political folks (which is most of us on political forums like this) will generally vote for whomever represents our policy positions best no matter what. We have our team and half the battle is defeating the other team. We will make excuses for our guy/girl even if all we have to care about is just defeating the opposition. Human nature and politics aren't going to change.
I don't personally care that Romney is a Mormon, and I don't care that Ryan is a Catholic. Romney/anyone represents my views better than Obama/Biden. Romney/anyone is the only ticket that has a chance of removing Obama/Biden from office. That is reason enough to vote for Romney/anyone. I think Ryan is a good choice because it may focus the election more on debt and spending. That is a debate the country needs. If I found out Ryan was a nutter who really believed in the great cockroach God I'd still vote for him so long as he lobbied and/or voted for my policy positions (and kept his cockroach worship secret so as not to become a liability). Silly examples, but you get the point (even if you don't agree).
(All I'm addressing there is consistency; I'm glad you see my point at least on this question)
