Mitt’s Mormonism has never been irrelevant to the Christian social conservative base of the party. Neither has his pro abortion, pro homosexual record.
The socially conservative Catholicism of this VP pick is immensely important to getting the base of the party to show up on election day. Up till now there was neither a Christian (either party) nor a social conservative on the ticket.
Now there is.
It’s as simple as that.
The base has just made a huge sigh of relief and is now rolling up its sleeves to get to work. It would not have done so had Romney picked someone like Rice.
