I don’t think he was unaware of the difference between Muslim and Sikh either. I don’t think he cared at all. He was looking to gun down ‘ferners’ and commit suicide by cop, and he did.

There is enough strangeness to this that I think there is more to it.
Several witness have said there was more than one shooter; and that a couple of men had cased the temple I think the Friday before.
It stinks.
