From the onslaught of AIDS in the 1980’s, many believed it was a “judgment from God” on this lifestyle. It may not be PC to say this in your purview, but I have no problem with her statement. There is an “actions have consequences sort of thing built in to life.
Some of this stuff is like the little “squeel tab” on your brakes that let’s you know it’s time to replace them. It’s a warning to change things before they get worse.
