Californians just can't get enough guns and are on a pace to set a new annual record for the number purchased legally.
Experts with the state Department of Justice predict residents will buy 725,000 rifles, pistols and shotguns in 2012, nearly twice the number they purchased five years ago, when 370,628 were acquired.
Over the last decade, annual purchases have increased despite the lackluster economy and a dramatic drop in crime.
The state doesn't record the personal history of those who purchase guns, nor their reasons for buying them, so it's hard to pinpoint a reason for the increase, experts say.
There are theories, however.

Anybody worthwhile running against him?
That is sad as SD used to be a conservative town
Now Normal Heights is anything but normal
Give it time. They’ll get crisis going. IMO
Luckily, the liberals aren’t getting guns. Mostly it’s just the law abiding citizens.
Vote the Ahole out!
Not worthwhile enough or we wouldn't have a Sheriff Gore.
I will pick up two more myself...
SD was conservative but no more. The gay mafia and the pro-ILLEGAL alien crowd have taken over. Sad indeed.
We tried last election but the liberals voted for him.
The government doesn’t need to know if I own a firearm, how many, what my proficiency level is, my TTP or ROE. That is liberty, and nearly impossible for the liberal mindset to grasp.
Fixed it.
In sacto we have done a 180 since the late 80's. In fact, last election, both candidates for sheriff ran on a pro ccw platform!, much to the chagrin of the city politicos.
Takes a lot of work to turn the ship, but is can be turned, in small degrees.
Better luck next time.
Best regards.
My how the place has changed.
I used to love Western Steakburger. Gus and Maria were the greatest!
Now I find this article that pans the place.
Hmmpff!!

On further reading, they don’t pan it.
One of my old staples.
725,000 rifles, pistols and shotguns in 2012!
This state is about taxes, fees, licenses, money, money, money.
I wonder if some of those democrats in Sacramento are thinking about what kind of revenue 3 million concealed carry licenses, at $200.00 a pop, and gun class fees, etc, would bring in to feed the government pensions.
They know it will get ugly when the state’s welfare system crashes and the Takers aren’t getting anything from the Makers anymore.
The dead weight in humanity that needs to be culled out isn’t the elderly, or the unborn. It’s those that are deliberate PARASITES that believe they DESERVE to live off everyone else for nothing. That is what is destroying this country. Among other things.
IMHO, Steinberg and his ilk simply cannot agree to that, no matter what the "profit" in terms of taxes. It is totally against their very core of liberalism.
'Sides, doj gets 48 bucks, and county get 28. The qualifications are paid to private run orgs.
I think the PTB are more worried about the number of firearms that are NOT represented by ccw. It stifles their plans long term.
Don't forget, this is per year.
Since roos roberti in 89, I suspect many hundreds of thousands of firearms have passed annually into the hands of the citizenry of this state.
As someone posted up thread, they have no idea.
I sometimes eat at this fast food place where apparently a lot of welfare types dine. The other day I overheard conversations from fellow diners about being in Section 8 housing. Another time, one healthy, able-bodied young woman was discussing how to get her "own apartment" apparently with help from the government. Another time an apparently healthy man, not old or infirm, said he was looking forward to the first of the month because "it's Christmas!" This place also seems to attract a number of panhandlers.
About a week ago I was in a grocery store and on the way in saw/heard an agitated woman talking with the cashier about how "$400 had just been loaded" on her [EBT?] card and how she couldn't figure out why she didn't have any money left and there had to have been a problem with the cashier's computer. Twenty minutes later, after I had finished my shopping and was on my way out the door, she was still there arguing.
