If Barack Obama were dreaming up the ideal start to Mitt Romney's first overseas visit as the presumptive Republican nominee, the president might wonder whether his rival could offend the US's historic transatlantic ally.
That would obviously be rejected as impossibly ambitious, so the president might then ask himself whether Romney would fail to remember the name of one of his hosts in London.
Surely a successful businessman would never make such a basic error. So the president would wonder whether Romney would breach convention by saying in public that he met the head of MI6, Britain's overseas intelligence agency.
To the undoubted joy of the White House, Romney stumbled on all those fronts in London on Thursday, the first day of his visit to three of the US's closest allies - Britain, Israel and Poland.
Downing Street, which had gone to great lengths to give Romney the red carpet treatment without breaching strict protocol rules, was astonished when he questioned whether London was capable of running a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC after his arrival in London, Romney said it was "disconcerting" that the Olympics organizers had encountered difficulties over security. One Whitehall source described Romney's remarks as a "total shocker" that had rendered officials "speechless"...

“Has the UK truly not gotten the message that we really dont give a blip what they think?”
They know, it’s just that when Romney does stupid crap like
this it gives them the hope of significance. They really want
to matter and they know that Obama is the only way they can
bring America down three flights below the gutter to their
level.
He was not my first, second nor third choice.
But its foolish to believe the two are the same.
Or a saving grace would be if he turns out to be right.
Screw the Guardian, they make MSNBC seem moderate, but why the heck is Willard overseas in the first place? He should be barnstorming battleground states right now, not hanging out with squishy UK “conservatives” or giving interviews with the unbelievably vicious UK press.
So what? He's a geek, a successful numbers guy.
Compare that to the great results we've had with Zero, a "charismatic" candidate with the economic comprehension of a kindergartner.
But its foolish to believe the two are the same.
When I say the same, I don’t necessarily mean an American hater type...I know only Obama hates America. What I mean is that Romney is going to disappoint A LOT!!!! We are going to see the Romney supporters complaining about him the next four years like crazy. He will be called a RINO more times then we can count. The problem I have with Romney fans is the cheerleading. He does not deserve it. I will vote for him but I will be damned if I am going to speak positively about him. That to me is a lie to cheerlead a guy who does not deserve it.
If they were shocked at the questions about the olympics, it just shows how badly they are handling the olympic security issue. The issue was well-known, and it shouldn’t have surprised any official at all to hear that people would mention it.
I hadn’t pictured the British as an overly sensitive lot.
I have no expectations other than he's not Obama. If it were Clinton in the White House, I probably wouldn't vote for Mitt....but Obama is just too much, he's got to go, by hook or by crook.
“So what?” You think having foot in mouth disease is a positive attribute for a presidential candidate?
Its those few times he won't that will make the difference.
I hope the reports are not true that Mitt is now trying to make nice with the Brits, which will viewed as nothing but an admission that he was wrong, and is too weak to maintain his convictions.
Yep - Romney’s stumbling to the front of the fundraising race, all right.
(And, no, I neither trust nor particularly like the guy.)
The headline alone identifies the steaming pile that is this article.
All got up by the politically correct babblers. Braying nincompoops all. It too will pass. I am sure George Orwell turns over in his grave.
You told me you were not available, Romney replied, laughing.
Touche, Williams said, losing the trail on that line of questioning

Yes, I saw the FR link to that story earlier. I’m not sure what it proves, though. No one’s claiming every single thing out of his mouth is a gaffe. The fact remains he has an awkward talent for putting his foot in his mouth.
Remember the comment about the trees in Michigan being the right height, LOL?
I’m starting to worry about how Romney is going to do in the debates.
Well, he’s thin-skinned and seems to be easily flustered. Remember the primary debates, when Rick Perry managed to get him red-faced and stammering?
I really wish Newt had been able to make it.
At least he doesn’t go around saying, “You didn’t build that!”. True to form, Obama has delivered Gaffe Optimus Maximus. His off-prompter speaking skills are on a par with his economic brilliance.
Oh, I agree, that moron in the White House is in a class by himself.
