Forty-five years after Detroit's deadly race riots, a collection of powerful photographs have been released chronicling what remains one of the bleakest chapters in United States history.
Sparked by a police raid on a bar in a predominantly black neighbourhood, the socially, economically and racially-charged riots lasted four days and nights during the long, hot summer of 1967.
Late photographer Lee Balterman captured the fierce unrest, which left America stunned and Detroit scarred to this day, in a collection of heartbreaking yet powerful pictures, published by Life.com on the 45th anniversary of the event.

Well, at least it won’t happen again. Nothing left to burn.
And white flight happened, look at Detroit now.
He said it all stemmed from that.
Of course he is a raging liberal marxist.
Probably just Times’ way of showing whitey what to expect if Obama isn’t reelected.
Plenty of productive blacks fled too. One of my neighbors says that’s when his dad packed up and got his family out.
We lived close enough to see the smoke. Within a month, my parents packed up everything we owned, and moved us 300 miles north.
It's now a 'rat hell hole.
Newark, NJ had riots the same summer.
It has never recovered either.
Very sad to see what an empty shell Detroit is. Virtually none of the “business” streets in Detroit, outside of the casino and other small, protected areas, have any business on them.
A while back, the local left was making a big stink about why there are no grocery stores left in the city. They shut up when it came out that the reason was, the “customers” (and employees) were stealing everything that wasn’t nailed down.
I have to wonder about the timing. Seems like it was meant to be a warning...or a threat.
Detroit Denby Class of 67 here. Could smell the smoke from the central business distict all the way on the East Side. Crazy thieving Amish burned down there own businesses and neighborhoods. This WAS the beginning of the demise of Detroit.
I remember Walther Ruether promising to rebuild Detroit with the UAW. Bullsh!t on that!!!
White Flight and smart middle class Amish got out too.
All that was left was welfare mamas, ho’s, murdering thieves, and socialist DemoRATS.
My beloved Detroit is Gone with the Wind!!!
How many places in the world that have a majority of blacks and success has followed? South Africa? Detroit?
There was a riot there is 1943, too!

A great HBO documentary about how the 68 Tigers, at least for a short while, brought the people of Detroit together after the riots.
Hmmm...........National Guard, 82nd Airborne............Where are all the screams about Posse Comitatus, banding together to defend against an encroaching government, and NWO?
“300 miles north” Where did that land ya? Still there?
Get ready for more such riots when Obama loses Nov. 6
This tells you how dishonest the article is. The liberal Democrat politicians who controlled Detroit in 1967 let Black thugs run wild and refused to protect homeowners and business owners. Rioters were allowed to keep going until dozens of people died and millions of dollars of property were destroyed. The mayor of Detroit was LBJ's favorite mayor and the head of LBJ's Model Cities program. Only after the National Guard was sent in was order restored.
Detroit continued in a “quiet riot” for the next 45 years. Blacks looting stores, committing crime and authorities allowing it to continue and refusing to take action. Today Detroit is destroyed. It is a bankrupt, violence prone hellhole. It is the end result of liberal Democrat policies and liberal, Democrat politicians.
