INDIANAPOLIS -- Penn State football was all but leveled Monday by an NCAA ruling that wiped away 14 years of coach Joe Paterno's victories and imposed a mountain of fines and penalties, crippling a program whose pedophile assistant coach spent uncounted years molesting children, sometimes on university property. The sanctions by the governing body of college sports, which capped eight months of turmoil on the central Pennsylvania campus, stopped short of delivering the "death penalty" of shutting down the sport. But the NCAA hit Penn State with $60 million in fines, ordered it out of the postseason for four years, and will cap scholarships at 20 below the normal limit for four years. The school also will be on probation for five years.

By leaving Joe Paterno’s name on the library, do you think it’s a subtle reminder to keep quiet in there?
Good points, Mime. Who knows what might have happened to Paterno if he took action against a homosexual coach without rock-solid evidence of pedophilia. But now Paterno, being safely dead, was in no position to defend himself.
What did Sandusky have in common with “predator priests”? They were homosexual. Thus already biologically, sexually abnormal. And now many Obamaniacs want the Boy Scouts to accept homosexuals.
Now we’ve got PSU millions going to organizations to help abused kids. Hmm, maybe I can get some of that loot, even without a law degree. Yeah, that’s the ticket! I’ll open a home for them. I think I’ll call it “The Second Mile”.
In 1998, the mother of a young boy designated by the grand jury as "Victim 6" became suspicious when her son and Sandusky showed up at her home with wet hair. The boy, according to the grand jury report, acknowledged that he had showered with Sandusky, prompting the mother to call Penn State University police.
In a later conversation with Sandusky with two university detectives listening in the coach allegedly admitted hugging the boy while both were naked in the shower, the grand jury reported. "I was wrong," Sandusky allegedly told the mother. "I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won't get it from you. I wish I were dead."
The case was referred to then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar, who declined to prosecute the case in 1998, the grand jury found.
Gricar's decision has not been explained. He has been missing since 2005 and has since been declared dead after authorities recovered his abandoned car and the prosecutor's computer, absent its hard drive.
State police spokesman Sgt. Anthony Manetta said there is no apparent link between the prosecutor's disappearance and the Sandusky case.

Maybe the NCAA could dedicate a few thousand of their new found money to posting a reward for the whereabouts of Ray Gricar's hard drive.
Out of the mouth of babes. Why hasn't somebody pointed this out sooner??? Is this the open secret that everyone is beating around the bush to avoid???
$6 million insulates a lot of Trustees and donors from investigation, doesn't it???
And if the culprits can just keep piling vitriol onto Joe Paterno for all of this, things might just get back to normal sooner than later. Heck $13 million a year might just be the seed money for a new hub of Sanduskys.
Leonard, it's REAL simple...and this explanatory NCAA bylaw made the rounds numerous times in FR threads last November...
Just because you specifically aren't aware of ALL the bylaws each university "signs up" to adhere to as part of the NCAA, doesn't mean they don't exist or aren't to be applied...
NCAA Bylaw 2.4: The Principles of Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, student-athletes, coaches, and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifest not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program.
* Are you somehow wildly claiming that all of this was somehow beyond "ethical conduct?" (Sorry, Leonard; "ethical conduct" is covered under bylaw 2.4)
* Do you somehow wildly believe that each of these coaches & admins were setting wonderful, exemplary actions that "promote[d] the character development of participants"? (Sorry, Leonard; egregious breaches of this can't be ignored)
* Do you somehow wildly believe that Penn State covering up child rape "enhanced the integrity" of Penn State as an institution of "higher education"? (Sorry, Leonard; but 'twas an epic failure here)
* Do you wildly claim that the Penn State "athletics program..." has over these past 15 years "adhere[d] to such fundamental values as...honesty and responsibility"??? (Sorry, Leonard; but if Penn State or Paterno or the campus admins are your collective "poster boy" for conveying 'fundamental values' of 'honesty and responsibility' both to those on and off the campus, you are one wacky assessor of values)
Therefore, under NCAA bylaw 2.4, NCAA HAS the authority to hold Penn State accountable for...
* Egregious ethical violations;
* Actively contributing to a whirlwind of campus moral freefall with by way of demoting character enhancement;
* Forfeited its reputational integrity via attempting to compartmentalize criminal and ethical behavior from what its campus actions, oversight, and accountability process mandated -- all the while seriously contributing as an accomplice to serial child-rape and the delinquency of minors;
* And sharply ignored -- DAILY ignored -- practicing such fundamental values as honesty and responsibility. ****
Fact: JoePa was the HIGHEST paid employee at Penn State and was a personality 'god' there...(anything he said went)
Fact: AFTER grad student Mike McQueery became a child rapist eyewitness, JoePa elevated this child-rapist eyewitness Mike McQueery from grad student to wide receivers coach -- and then promoted him again as holding BOTH the WR coach position AND head of recruiting...these bought the continued silence of McQueery until he was brought before a grand jury.
Fact: JoePa (& other admins) covered up what he/they knew and utilized his/their power to bury eyewitness evidence for as long as possible, and failed to take steps to ensure that Sandusky didn't have continued open access to the Penn State campus.
All of this WILL not only result in the multi hundreds of $millions of loss suffered by Penn State's insurance, (which will turn around and gouge Penn State with exorbitant make-up premiums until Christ returns), but will continue to drag Penn State, The Big 10, and the NCAA thru the mud for decades to come!
The new full-time job of dozens associated with Penn State will be either providing civil-suit depositions or involved in some other full-time manner (PR dept, etc.), which ultimately will NOT prove to be good stewardship of ANYBODY on the Penn State payroll being funded by student funds or benefactors.

Bottom line, Leonard: If YOU want to keep up your online advocacy on behalf of those protecting and enabling a serial child rapist to continue violently and sexually abusing little boys, go right ahead. But your credibility via such advocacy on FR has been shot! And there are fewer institutions worth wasting it on than Penn State!
Indeed.
(And if Penn State is going to leave a library named after Paterno, they might as well "erect" a sign on its locker room showers as "Sandusky Showers" (no pun originally intended) -- "Here by permission of JoePa[thetic], his assistant coaches, his admins, some of the Penn State trustees, and a few others 'in the know'"
(Actually, to update what I posted back to this comment in response #131 -- I didn't realize that Penn State had already signed the NCAA consent decree to these sanctions...they were signed Sunday night...see: College Station VIDEO: CDT interview with Rodney Erickson, Dave Joyner and Karen Peetz
Per Rodney Erickson of Penn State, who signed those sanctions on behalf of the Presidential Council, he had the choice of agreeing to those sanctions or having the NCAA give Penn State the Death Penalty. (He chose the former)
The NCAA made Penn State an offer they couldn’t refuse.
You are mistaken in your notion here that taxpayers will foot the bill...If you watch this video -- shot Monday in State College -- the admins there (Rodney Erickson and AD Dave Joyner) made it quite clear that NO taxpayer $ would be used to pay the NCAA fine...
See: College Station VIDEO: CDT interview with Rodney Erickson, Dave Joyner and Karen Peetz
(Also, to update what I posted back to this comment earlier in the thread -- I didn't realize that Penn State had already signed the NCAA consent decree to these sanctions...they were signed Sunday night...
Per Rodney Erickson of Penn State @ that same vid link, who signed those sanctions on behalf of the Presidential Council, he had the choice of agreeing to those sanctions or having the NCAA give Penn State the Death Penalty. (He chose the former)
Given that Penn State agreed to the sanctions -- and will not appeal them -- shows they recognize they had a football culture out-of-control...lack of accountability and lack of transparency.
In that vid clip, both of those phrases come thru loud & clear from the three Penn State reps. They know the campus culture needs to change...(the only problem is that they think it will come from the "top-down")
Indeed.
Yet another article I read from the State College paper Monday (see: http://www.centredaily.com/2012/07/23/3270222/community-leaders-we-need-to-start.html) shows a lot of community leaders there still don't get it.
One commissioner was blaming the NCAA for these problems -- which just shows an extended failure for Penn State to accept responsibility -- one of the "fundamental values" specifically covered under NCAA bylaw 2.4 that Penn State badly failed.
Another commissioner claimed they were the ones now "victimized." (Oh, please...Penn State drama queen at-large! I guess they really STILL don't understand that term, "victim!")
* One person quoted claimed it was unfair to blame the "entire community";
* another person claimed it was unfair to blame the "entire university";
* another person claimed it was unfair to punish student-athletes part of the program ... as if the NCAA would ever have the ability to ALWAYS hand down punishments during the exact seasons in which violations occur (what a ridiculous conclusion...to think there would be some perfect tit-for-tat roster alignment re: sanctions...)
Some leaders took on a few lens with some more realistic economic filters...the mayor said: There are concerns about people coming to our town. I know our businesses all rely on the tourists that come to our games and come to visit Penn State.
One commissioner added that "the scandal shows the county cant continue to rely so heavily on the university, and must work to build a 'broader base.' The Harris Township mgr added: "I think we need to start looking at ways to make State College a town that relies on more than one economic driver.
Well, NONE of these leaders seemed to be publicly thankful that State College and its surrounding communities just dodged the death penalty...which would have placed them into immediate deep economic waters!
I don't trust Louis Freeh.
When he was selected, I posted that on FR several times - running down his track record at the FBI.
I wouldn't be surprised if he truthfully pointed out the errors of those no longer in power (Schultz, Paterno, Curley, Spanier) while taking only a few cheap shots at the BOT and leaving the sacred fruit intact.
As for Jay Paterno?
Well, I believe Sandusky's dirty little secret was whispered about openly in a fairly broad circle.
Philadelphia Magazine mentioned it in an article in late winter/early spring 2011, months before the November indictment - quoting someone who had been told by Curley back in 1998. In its special issue, right after the scandal broke, Sports Illustrated quoted a barber with a shop near Penn State as saying that Penn State administrators had talked and joked about it in her shop.
There were law enforcement officers (university and city) who knew, Penn State officials, coaches - I think a lot of people knew. So few schools approached Sandusky after his retirement at the height of his career - ending on a year he was named NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year.
It's my opinion, but I think a lot of people are happy they aren't being asked under oath whether they heard the rumor.
No. I just don’t like the fact that the NCAA is sticking its nose into business best left to the courts, not the court of public opinion. The appeal process will just waste more money.
I think you forgot the sarcasm tag. Money is fungible. That $60 million that comes from other source that could have been used for other campus-related activities will now have to come from other sources. Who do you think is going to get stuck with that?
I have in no way said anything that could be construed as “advocacy” for child rape. For you to imply that makes you a no class douche bag.
All I see from you is a defense of the enabler-accomplices...and no condemnation of them...even an attorney defending an accomplice in a rape case is an “advocate”...an “advocate” isn’t always one who comes along to promote crime...an “advocate” can be somebody who comes alongside them and defends somebody accused of misconduct or a crime...keep things civil and don’t start hurling ad hominens left and right
I apologize.
My personal belief is that the janitor who first saw a boy being raped should have taken an axe handle and bashed Jerry Sandusky in the face and called the police. End of story. No Scandal.
Joe Paterno sealed his guilt with the comment “I wish I had done more.” Not I wish I KNEW more about what was going on.
He is an example of Absolute Power eventually Corrupting absolutely. He viewed himself as a benevolent dictator. He believed that he could render the final judgement on any matter. Like I said, the trial will make him look even worse than he does now.
Spanier is beneath contempt. A limp wristed elite that should have fire Paterno ten years ago. His is reaping what he has sowed with his support of a deviant lifestyle and his covering up of an actual deviant! Schultz and Curley were similar to the Germans that “guarded” the extermination camps, wanting to believe they were not involved.
My concern is that these vile creatures are no longer a part of Penn State. I have to believe 99.9999 percent of those who will suffer in State College haven’t done a thing wrong. I know that is how it has always worked with the NCAA. I just don’t agree with it. That doesn’t mean I ADVOCATE for child rapists.
Sandusky is done. Throw him a couple of long, strong shoelaces. Maybe he can save us some tax dollars. I want to know what Paterno(Estate), Spanier, Curley, and Schultz are going to have to pay for ruining children’s lives and taking Penn State down the tube.
