Continuing from CBS:

“He said pictures from inside the apartment are fairly disturbing and the devices look to be sophisticated, adding the booby-traps were ‘something I’ve never seen.’ One rifle, two handguns, a knife, a bullet proof vest, a ballistic helmet, a gas device, a gas mask, military SWAT clothing and unidentified explosives were also found in Holmes’ car, a law enforcement source told CBS News. [Police Chief] Oates said Holmes wore a gas mask, a ballistic helmet and vest as well as leg, groin and throat protectors during the shooting.”

Added on July 22nd: “He allegedly wore a helmet, a throat guard, a ballistic vest, ballistic leggings and gloves and was dressed in black.”

In other words, this guy was equipped with exotic gear by someone with connections to military equipment. SWAT clothing, explosives, complex booby-traps... c’mon, this isn’t a “lone gunman.” This is somebody who was selected for a mission, given equipment to carry it out, then somehow brainwashed into getting it done.

“Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Holmes’ apartment is booby-trapped with a ‘sophisticated’ maze of flammable devices. It could take hours or days for authorities to disarm it,” reports Yahoo News

UPDATE: (This section added to the story Saturday at 2:30 pm central, July 21, 2012). It is now being reported that exotic, advanced booby-traps have been disarmed at the apartment of James Holmes. The Denver affiliate of CBS News is now reporting:

Officials say they have removed all major threats at the booby-trapped apartment of the Aurora movie theater shooting suspect on Saturday. They have used a robot to go inside James Holmes’ apartment. ...They were able to disable a trip wire that was set to go off when the apartment door was opened. “This is some serious stuff that our team is dealing with...”

Tin Foil Hat Area?

I wish it were, but am not surprised the judge has sealed the case.

No. Nothing he was wearing, nothing he was using, nor anything that has been reported as him owning requires any leap into fantasy as to it's origins. Do an internet search for body armor as an example.

All it takes to get this stuff is money...and that's as easy as running up a few credit cards. Who cares about a credit score if you are going to end up in prison or the morgue?

An ROTC unit at the college or colleges he attended as a source of the body armor?

The “exotic gear” is all available on the internet if you look around. The 100 round mag tells me he did NOT have help, or the helpers would have steered him away from those jamamatics. The booby traps they “never saw before” were original to him, a high-IQ science student. To be expected from a guy with no training or “help” in demolitions. The only things not readily available on the internet are CS grenades, we’ll have to wait to see how he found or created them. Everything else, you could have ordered and shipped to your house UPS or FedEx in three days.

This morning’s web posts indicate the shooter had a $26,000/year fellowship, but at the end of last year (a couple of months ago), his college professor met with his peers at an after-finals pizza bash. The shooter was absent sparking inquiries from his peers who were told by the professor that the shooter had resigned from the fellowship because he couldn’t keep up academically.

This implies the school had forced the hand of the shooter to resign his fellowship, but will claim he resigned on his own.

If true, then this probably occurred about the same time the shooter was starting to buy the handguns. Employment opportunities for an undergrad in neuroscience who drops out of grad school probably aren’t very high. He already had suffered the labeling as a loser, when he might have been giving all he had.

News reports this morning also indicate the only reason he was captured was that his groin and neck protection wasn’t usually worn by the Aurora responders. I suspect he was wearing them as camouflage to walk away unidentified in the mayhem.
