I don’t see him picking a conservative at all. I hope I am wrong, but Romeny doesn’t want to share the glory with the VP. I think he’d pick Biden if he had his way so the contrast between the 2 might make Romeny look better.

You could very well be correct, and I'm sure he's thinking those things you mentioned. However, I think what might stop him picking someone like that, is that he will realize that if he doesn't placate the conservatives, he has no chance of winning the election, due to him being such a poor establishment choice to start with, as our nominee.
The republican nominee needed to be someone that all factions could at least get somewhat excited about and get behind. Romney is most certainly not that person. Party members having to vote for someone because the other guy is worse, is a horrible strategy to rely on for a victory.
