What a yucky experience for you. I do sympathize. Yes, it was March, I think, when I went. I lived in L.A. But I had no idea that Palm Springs overall was like that. I always associated it with old time show business like Bob Hope and Sinatra. And I liked that mid 50s square number - and also Indio, and thr date orchards - I really liked it - so I’m surprised to learn what you tell me.

Palm Springs has become like that in my lifetime; it's "Where old queens come to die." The Spring Break Riot in the late '80s really cemented it; once cruising was banned, the college-age straights went to Havasu instead. The White Party then became the biggest draw to PS, leading to gays buying 2nd houses and retirement homes.

Let me tell you, it's a world of difference when a group is 10% of the population instead of 2%.
