Class of 2007: Reunion after a tough 5 years
The Washington Post ^ | July 12, 2012 | Jenna Johnson

carlisle, pa. — The Class of 2007 was the last to finish college before the recession hit. Five years later, those graduates are returning to alma maters for their first milestone reunion — and reflecting on cruel economic times.

Here at Dickinson College in south-central Pennsylvania, at open bars and formal dinners, they swapped stories about the challenge of establishing careers and lives when great jobs are so hard to find.

“When we graduated, we were all chomping at the bit to get out of here and change the world,” said Katie Fox, 27, who took out loans to pay for Dickinson, where her fields were sociology and environmental studies, and is borrowing more for a graduate degree in regional planning from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. “We’re still trying to figure that out.”

I was thinking the same thing..

I have a 2 year business degree.
4 years of a clean driving record and a CDL
I am a ASE Master Mechanic
I am a A+ computer technician
I am a power limited electrician
I am not afraid to get up at 5 am and go down at 12am, and repeat it the next day when needed.

I have no student loans, I spent 2 years in school before going out in to the field.

I never seem to have troubles finding work.

The class president however, was able to acquire $1000 worth of booze for $1500 in food stamps thru a unique networking system the class had set up...

Getting a degree in a Career Field that a prospective employer wants would be a good start.

And Katie get her first lesson, "the world bites back". No, Katie, we all weren't just waiting for you to change us and show us the error of our ways. Some of us were like you once, but we were kicked in the teeth by reality decades ago. So enjoy reality, and yes, I will have fries with that, thank you.

Sociology, Environmental Studies and Regional Planning.... Wow! And she can’t get a job? What a shocker!!! I would have thought there would be 100,000 high-paying jobs available in those fields. (Shhhh..... Keep this on the down-low. But, I bet she’s a Liberal.)

many ’07 grads have been unemployed or underemployed. Some move on to graduate school, others move back into their childhood bedrooms. They have perfected the art of writing LinkedIn résumés, Craigslist roommate ads and online dating profiles.

I hope everyone of them were Obama supporters in 2008.

YES WE CAN
YES WE CAN

Hats off to you.

My friend’s grandson just turned 21, didn’t go to college and was a C/D student in high school. Learned to weld and made $90,000 last year working in ND in the oil patch. Will make more than that this year. Saves most of his money, no social life but knowing him he’ll make up for it when he’s a bit older. But he works his butt off and never turns down overtime. He’s good enough that they now have him teaching others how to weld. Hard life for a young’un but he’s so proud of what he’s been able to accomplish all on his own.

Had my forty year reunion in June. Young hippies are now old hippies. Laughable.

Last night my dentist informed me that it now costs 500,000 to become a Dentist. Question: How can that possibly work out?

I'm sure that, along with Obamacare simultaneously driving prices up and doctors' compensations down, will go far to reduce the number of dentists. Heaven knows, we have *way* too many right now. < /sarc >

Are DDS included in zer0care? I know oral surgeons are, but I'm not sure about regular dentists.Ophthalmologists are, but are opticians or optometrists?

Of course, that could change.

“When we graduated, we were all chomping at the bit to get out of here and change the world,” said Katie Fox, 27

The world is not going to form to your desires. You may want everyone but you to drive green cars but they aren’t going to do it.
A friend has a daughter who just graduated with a degree in Sustainability. She wants everyone to drive a green car but she dries a pickup truck because it is all she can afford because she has a degree in Sustainability.
