President Obama said last month that America can educate its way to prosperity if Congress sends money to states to prevent public school layoffs and "rehire even more teachers." Mitt Romney was having none of it, invoking "the message of Wisconsin" and arguing that the solution to our economic woes is to cut the size of government and shift resources to the private sector. Mr. Romney later stated that he wasn't calling for a reduction in the teacher forcebut perhaps there would be some wisdom in doing just that.
Since 1970, the public school workforce has roughly doubledto 6.4 million from 3.3 millionand two-thirds of those new hires are teachers or teachers' aides. Over the same period, enrollment rose by a tepid 8.5%. Employment has thus grown 11 times faster than enrollment. If we returned to the student-to-staff ratio of 1970, American taxpayers would save about $210 billion annually in personnel costs.

I recall 30+ as the norm circa 1960. Basically 6X5 desks in a room with a partial 6th row.
Ugh! Don’t get me started on Dewey. Horrible educator.
Wrong headline. America has too many “educators” and way too few teachers.
What I don't understand is how Barry demands that the government needs to hire more teachers, when its the districts themselves that do the hiring according to their needs.
Another zero rant that goes nowhere when you understand the truth behind it.
Agreed. Getting rid of one administrator equals cutting 2-3 teachers.
But every teacher in a “rubber room” should be terminated immediately.
Kind of like Bill Clinton wanted to add 100,000 extra cops to the streets in the U.S.
Absolutely!
Ok...So,... government owned and run socialist-entitlement schooling worked somewhat well in the beginning. So will Obamacare! Why? Because the values of those who first worked in the system. We won't immediately see a great difference in our medical care. It will take a generation or two before the real horror of Obamacare is felt by all.
In a generation or two every proposed solution now being offered up to “fix” socialist-entitlment schooling will be hauled out to “fix” socialist-entitlment health care. Few citizens will see or understand that socialist-entitlement programs can NOT NOT NOT be fixed!
One more thing,...your teachers likely came from my father's generation ( born 1913). He grew up in a household where his grandfather served in the Civil War! If socialist-entitlement schooling limped along somewhat effectively for us, it was due to the values of teachers working to overcome the impossible.
The **PROBLEM** with our system of socialist-entitlement schooling is that it is SOCIALIST! The only possible solution is privatization.
The problem: American has a government owned and run socialist-entitlement school system. It has **always** been a socialist-entitlement system and that we have the mess we do today was completely predictable.
The solution: Complete privatization!
On average education majors have the lowest SAT and GRE scores on campus. So....If you know a really smart teacher, somewhere out there in Educationland is a really dumb teacher that is averaging out the averages. Scary to think about. Isn't it?
Next...Nearly any teacher working for more than a year in the government's socialist-entitlement schools is a LIAR! Why do I say that? Reason: The number of functional illiterates and innumerates who are awarded high school diplomas and then go on to fail their military entrance exams. ALL of these teachers and principals should be criminally prosecuted for defrauding the parents, the child, and the taxpayers, and then hit with a massive class action suit that would financially leave them completely destitute.
Hello,
“The Cartel” is an excellent documentary on the very subject you reference:
