Republicans must always run on the side of liberty to win. Eisenhower, later Nixon, Reagan, Bush.

Democrats can do whatever they want unless the Republican runs on the side of liberty. Then they lose.

Romney will probably need to change his gameplan considerably to win. At the moment he's considered to be as much a leftist as the Democrat (or any conceivable Democrat replacement), so the Republican Conservative base needs much more than he's been willing to give.
