On that clip Romney explains that Obama-mandate is a tax because the SCOTUS said so, but he believed it was a fine before that, but now it is tax because of the ruling.
So he was asked the obvious question: is the Romney-care mandate (with a much bigger fine/tax) was a tax too. Romney replies that states like MA can impose a fine without calling it a tax to make it constitutional but at the Federal level it must be called a tax. So Romney-care (mandate) is a fine, Obama-care is a tax.
WOW! Empty suit Romney is the gift that keeps on giving, to Democrats.
I think his comments on the SCOTUS ruling and his change of labels is appropriate.
If I were him and asked the same question about Romneycare, I’d focus on it along the lines of “if a court says it’s a tax, I’ll say it’s a tax. But no court has ruled on it.”
Oh, and I think his response rings true if one understands what is actually going on. Unfortunately, the electorate has proven over and over that it doesn’t, so you need to tailor your response to your audience.
FWIW, I’m no Romneybot. I refused to vote for him until the SCOTUS decision. I’ll now hold my nose and do what I must to remove Obama. We will then see if it does any good, which I doubt it will.
we could flip a coin, or better yet, just let it be a bambam/mittens ticket and they could be co-presidents...
“Romney replies that states like MA can impose a fine without calling it a tax to make it constitutional but at the Federal level it must be called a tax.”
Is this accurate?
