Barroso lashes out at British Tories over eurozone crisis

Addressing the European Parliament yesterday (3 July) in Strasbourg, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso slammed British euroskeptics for their divisive behavior and taking pleasure in the eurozone's troubles.

"Let me tell you that it is puzzling that you seem to delight in the difficulties of the euro area," Barroso told the British Tories, adding that this was in stark contrast with the position taken by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Barroso was taking aim especially at Conservative MEP Martin Callanan, who has repeatedly criticized bank bailouts as wasting taxpayers' money and talked in favor of eurozone exits for some countries.

According to Callanan, the alternative strategy is for the eurozone to reduce in size so that some countries have the ability to devalue their way back to relative competitiveness.

Barroso retorted that "there is a consensus, including among those states outside of the euro area, on the need to strengthen the euro area. It would be a complete mistake to try to divide the euro area from the rest of the EU."

"Those who know European history know how negative was the role of prejudices of one part of Europe over another,” he said, adding that the European project was made precisely to avoid these divisions of the past.

About 100 Conservative lawmakers wrote to Cameron last week calling for a legal commitment to holding a referendum in the next Parliament.

Cameron has rejected an immediate referendum, but signaled he is open to a vote on renegotiating British ties to the union. …

Barroso is the same guy who blamed the current Eurocrisis on the US.He is a firm believer in hair of the dog economics. His solution to the Eurocrisis caused by profligate spending was more profligate spending. If never right always wrong Paul Krugman could speak Portuguese he would be this guy.

Why doesn’t he slam Obama? Obama wants them to spend more and incur even more debt. He is the ultimate sadistic politician.

The USA isn’t a member of the EU. The UK is and refused to join the euro, which in their eyes is a violation of the Treaty of Lisbon in spite of their so-called “opt-outs” (Article 3 section 4 of that treaty has the simple statement “The Union shall establish an economic and monetary union whose currency is the euro”) . . . therefore in their eyes (or using their current excuse), anyone outside the euro has no right to criticism. (They would treat the UK like this even if they did give up sterling though.)

I notice they're throwing out this BS again about how a new Third Reich will rise if not for the 'restraining' influence of the EU. Last time I saw, the Neo-Nazi 'Golden Dawn' party in Greece did quite well in the Greek elections thanks to the EU induced monetary crisis in that country. Stable, prosperous countries don't degenerate into extremist nationalism, but the EU isn't exactly promoting that. The EU Government is more like the Yugoslavian Federal Government circa 1990..

She was right on the money - thankfully there was enough opposition that the UK kept its own currency and has avoided that part of the disaster.
