He was warned. I don't understand why so many smokers who are knowledgeable and thorough about fire safety in every other way pretend that a cigarette doesn't count as a fire, and smokers who would never litter otherwise are okay with tossing their cigarette butts on the ground.

That's the most amazing fire investigation I've ever read, with no fire accelerants used either.
They may want to finish the investigation and be sure, otherwise Thomas may consider suicide.

I’m going to say that there is a chance that this guy simply isn’t telling the truth.

Im going to say that there is a chance that this guy simply isnt telling the truth. Fires can happen accidentally.Authorities may investigate this further but if they find no evidence of gasoline, etc they'll probably accept it as an accident. The fact that the kid barely escaped himself seems to direct suspicion away from him.Incredibly careless? Yah. Arsonist? Probably not.

I believe mulch is more a generic term in this case......Probly weeks of leaves and dried up kindeling material that coulds smolder for hours and when the conditions were right ...POOF
How many forestfires are caused by aholes flipping butts out of cars that now no longer have ash trays.
That is a practice worthy of a 1000 dollar fine if caught,IF!

General carelessness. My daughter left one of her pet reptile’s sun lamps on and sitting atop an oak dresser while she cleaned its cage. Work completed, she hurriedly left for the weekend. I awoke at O’dark hundred that night to the delicious aroma of bar-b-que. Found the lamp slowly burning its way down through a smoldering dresser top glowing like a charcoal briquette. Another 1/2 inch, and it would have burned clear through.

My 2 cents...Tragic yes but some IDIOT cleaned out a wood burning appliance and put the coals, embers, ashes in a combustible container in the house(porch) or next to the house.(no container was found so it burned up,not noncombustible)When I woke Xmas and heard this I said this was 100% stupidity.
I burn wood all winter, the ashes go into a cast iron pot get covered and immediatly taken out doors, I never stop for any reason, and placed the container on the gravel drive next to a stone wall(no matter what the weather) and after a few days and the pot is cold they are scattered in the woods.
I consider this the most dangerous part of burning wood and do it once a week all winter. Also when I burn brush piles, this time of year after the pile has burned to the ground it is smoldering 2/3 days later so Smokey Bear is correct.

“stir the ashes, then drown again.” A 1960s Ad Council commercial on how to put out a campfire. I still remember the goofy VO and instructions.
To: t1b8zs
I know it’s incredibly tragic and stoopid, but apparently, they took the hot ashes out of the fireplace because the girls were concerned that Santa would not be able to get down the chimney. I am not sure they regularly used the fireplace. Alcohol was probably involved.

When I hear that story, I wonder how the boyfriend can live with himself. I remember when a local pediatricians house burned down during the night, he could not locate his daughter and died after re-entering the house to look for her. She was safely outside, but he did not locate her. You should definitely have a “rally point” where you agree to meet in case you have to evacuate your home for any reason.
His behavior is in such stark contrast to the boyfriend's. Faced with the same situation I would like to believe I would either get the girls out, or die trying.

Here in Texas as I drive home from work at night I see these smoking idiots throw their lit butts out all the time, they would rather burn down someones ranch than dirty up their ashtray or they drive one of the newer cars that don't have ashtrays. When it's dry here you see burnt and burning areas all up and the highways. People caught doing this should be charged with attempted arson. I'm not against smoking but carelessness with fire deserves a good butt-kicking.
