Short of extermination or displacement of a whole populace, no country ever quite ‘goes away’. The Russian Federation and its clients are a very different animal that the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. They did get rid of much of their dead wood and dead end economy, and so must we at some point.

We even have a recommendation to that effect:
“Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and Happiness.”

They aren’t all that much different. Remember Putin’s mad dash to renationalize the oil and gas companies in the mid-2000s? This is a man who said back in the 90s that the collapse of the USSR was the 20th Century’s “greatest geopolitical catastrophe”—not WWII or any other real calamity—so with that kind of thinking (and KGB indoctrination), the man would be working towards bringing the USSR back, but in his own image rather than pure communistic idealism . . . yet worse I think (considering what the Putin-worshiping Nashi are about, I start thinking fascism).
