It's worse than that. It says that the power to tax means that they can tax you for anything, even if they can't constitutionally do the thing they are taxing you for. So, the principle applies to all kinds of situations. They can tax you if you own guns. They can tax you if you peaceably assemble. They can tax you if you have opinions they don't like. They can tax you if you have a second child.

You see, they can't stop you from having a second child. But if you do, they can tax you $1 million. After all, it costs society to raise your child.

They can tax you for being Catholic.

They can tax you for posting on Free Republic.

The implications of this decision are mind-boggling.

“I’m sure a few state’s attorney’s general’s will now find the stones to make “Justice” Roberts get out his pen and provide the Court’s Constitutional definition of just exactly what a tax is....”

Actually, his opinion is rather clear. If the penalty is less than the activity penalized costs, then it’s within the taxing powers of congress. That is true even if congress doesn’t call it a tax and even if the sponsors of the bill deny over and over that it is a tax.

So if a Chevy Volt costs $40,000, a penalty for not buying a Volt of $20,000 passes consitutional muster.

Roberts should hang his head in shame.

The individual mandate thus cannot be sustained under Congress’s power to “regulate Commerce.”

Whip-de-do. Totally irrelevant. Power is power no matter the Constitutional justification.

Congress, the President will say anything to justify increasing the power of the State over the individual. One can try and rationalize this or that, but the very simple fact is that Liberty was dealt a death blow today.

Roberts clearly and decisively sided with State Power. The "regulate Commerce" phrasing is insulting. We are far beyond such trivialities of language.

We have entered the phase of raw, unbridled power wielded by Men who want to rule over others with an Iron fist.

Liberty is on life support in our Republic.

ObamaCare is the first of many Intolerable Acts under the Soetoro Regime that will likely lead to R2/CW2.

"And Republicans love power every bit as much as the Rats do."

We were just ruled meaning less and your rights completely taken away from you. What this does do is make the people part of the prize for winning. People can not grasp what Scotus just did.

Very well stated. BTW, did anyone notice that on the podium from which romney made his speech today had a sign on it stating obamacare - repeal and replace. Replace? Replace? Replace with what exactly? What happened to simply repealing this POS law? People, the most perfect covenant ever conceived on this earth, the US Constitution, was murdered today. It has been on life support for a very long time but today so-called justice roberts (may piss be apon him) pulled the cord and killed it. I only hope that obama will honor his side of the deal and give ole johnny roberts the reach-around.

Apparently Adams did not read what Roberts wrote

I think Adams has a better understanding than you do. What Roberts said is that Congress cannot force the citizenry by law to buy health insurance, but it can coerce the citizenry by taxation to do so. This is a distinction without a difference.

Just as bad, a part of the majority stated/established that the Constitution allows the federal government the power to tax without limit! Combined with giving .gov the power to COMPEL us to buy something from another individual, this is THE END folks.

If there was any doubt before, it should be clear now. We no longer live in a free country. Thank you ‘Benedict Roberts’.

(it makes me damn near physically ill knowing that KENNEDY was willing to toss out the whole damn thing, and it was ROBERTS that fell in line with the liberals!!!!!!!)

“wild misinterpretation of the Commerce Clause”

SC didn’t misinterpret the Commerce Clause, they abolished it.

Good point, reminds me of what Schwartenegger said when he ran for governor...”They tax you when you wake up, they tax you when you buy a coffee, they tax you ...etc etc”

The most likely next application will be requiring the purchase of “green energy” products. For example, every homeowner must install solar hot water heaters. If they do not, they have to pay a new energy tax.

We need someone to get out in front of this and demand that every household must have a gun....or pay a "tax"

Then, make the penalty for not buying omagube care applicable to one and ALL.

That should slap some sense into these morons who are celebrating this madness.

We have entered the phase of raw, unbridled power wielded by Men who want to rule over others with an Iron fist.

What I mean by above is that the power will not be wielded as done by dictators in the past.

It will be as Mark Levin states, a soft tyranny

The ruling class in D.C. will control our lives in every manner through endless regulations and edicts. They will intimidate us, humiliate us and fine us in order to bend us to their will.

Those doing the bidding of the elites will be enthusiastic people who relish the chance to be sadistic to their fellow citizens. There are large numbers of people who relish being part of such tyranny. It wont be a physical tyranny, but just as evil as any humans have experienced -- for they will take away our humanity.

Exactly. Congress will never again mandate desired behavior by law; now they'll simply compel the citizenry to conform through the coercion of taxation.
