Insurance firms today deal with the potential for these large regional catastrophes by selling what they call “cat bonds.” While normally the bonds gain value as the insurance firm accrues profits, a catastrophe vacuums them out for a certain number of years.

When people say insurance companies make big money, many times they are looking at the good years. I bad year like this, many times, wipes out years of profits. This fire looks like it could take out a company or two.
