Our family went to a really nice exhibition of Sendak’s work 8 years ago, with kid friendly activities and such. You would never guess that such hate and bitterness lurked in that man’s head.
While he was obviously no saint and a lefty all his life, I assume that he got nastier and more viciously outspoken in advanced age. I know my Dad said horrible things in the last 10 years of his life that he did not say in his prime. Such lewdness, racism, anger and jealousy came out, as I had never heard before. It went along with a decline in ability to think due to congestive heart failure. If you judged him only by the rants of his later years, you would have missed his really important contributions to the world as a father, a builder, a naval officer, etc.
I’m going to assume Sendak’s mind was in steep decline.

Or two face person, raging like a maniac....who knows, God will be judge.
Merci.
I’m not really trying to psychoanalyze Sendak ... but, a Freudian might suggest that Sendak was still steeped in his id. After 80 years of life he was probably no more mature than the spoiled brat Max who was sent to bed without his supper in his most well known book.
