On Morning Joe, Sam Stein Grills Ron Paul About Why He Collects Social Security

Ron Paul stopped by Morning Joe on Wednesday, where he discussed a range of issues, from whether he believes Mitt Romney has “core convictions” (Short answer: Yes, although Paul would ultimately like to change the GOP’s core convictions), to the delegates he’s obtained, to entitlement programs.

At one point in the segment, panelist Mike Barnicle asked Paul whether he was “headed in the direction of eliminating programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.”

Barnicle followed up by asking Paul whether he feels any obligation to talk to the younger generations or instrust them about “the fact that there has always been a social contract among Americans from one generation to another, to help those who need help the most.”

“Yeah,” Paul replied, “but not through government. The best way you can help people is to have freedom and free market incentives, production, sound money.”

Panelist Sam Stein had a question of a more personal nature: “Are you on Social Security? Do you get Social Security checks?”

“I do,” Paul answered.

“Well, I mean, is there… You just told younger generations that they should ween themselves off this social contract,” Stein responded. “But you haven’t done it yourself.”

How is Ron Paul getting Social Security checks when he has a Congressional salary?

Did they exempt themselves from the limitations that working stiffs have?

You can collect SS AND collect a salary.
You may pay income tax depending on how much the total is.

These types of interviews are right out of the grade school play ground. There is no hope for the USA because there can be no serious intellectual diacussions of issues and solutions. We are headed the way of Greece.

On Greece, did any see the news article on conditions in Greece that Drudge linked to? Very scary.

Is RP collecting SS? Stupid, Ambush question.

If he paid in, he Should be collecting it. For him it’s not a Govt handout. It’s his own money that Uncle Sam was supposed to be keeping in trust for him.

Now paying it out to Illegals who never paid in to begin with is wrong, but like I said, it’s an ambush question, kind of like when did you stop beating your wife?

Why don’t all the libs who tout higher taxes voluntarily pay more taxes themselves. You know, just to show a good example. What sanctimonious asses.

Social Security is “not a tax”. It is money you pay into an account held in trust by the US Government to be used as a retirement account when you reach retirement age. Ron Paul paid money into it in good faith, it’s his retirement account, he now takes his money out of it. Only the Government “borrowed” the money it held in trust meaning there is not enough to go around so the Progressives expect those who paid into it and had successful careers and other sources of income, to leave their money for other less fortunate folks.

There is no real trust fund and there never has been.

RP is justified in taking it because the income and FICA taxes he pays are considerably larger than the SS check. In essence, it is just a tax rebate paid to a net taxpayer.

Earnings limit for those under full retirement age is $14,160; for those turning 66 in 2012, the limit is $38,800; SSA says if those limits are exceeded, SS benefits will be reduced, so I imagine Paul’s benefits are reduced. I paid into SS and now draw it, but given my druthers, I’d have preferred private retirement, SS’s a scam.

That’s part of the problem. Too many people actually believe this non-sense. In actuality, it’s a socialist redistribution of wealth, nothing more. People working today are paying today’s retirees.

I’ve got no use for Dr. Paul, but what’s wrong with him collecting SS if he paid into the system?

Social Security is “not a tax”.

Wrong. Social Security has been ruled by the supreme court in the early 1960’s as just a tax and you’re not entitled to anything you paid in.It’s actually on the SS website.

I have no problem with RP taking the SS checks. He is a two faced liar and hypocrite though. He has grated on my nerves since he first entered politics in the seventies. Talks a good game , but is an empty shell when it comes down to brass tacks

I’ve got no problem with him getting SS either. He’ll get that and a hefty pension for his wasted time as a representative to boot

Love you Knee Jerking ‘Real’ conservatives who never miss an opportunity to sling Stuff at anyone who doesn’t scream hysterically that Ron Paul is an Idiot Clown, without stating anything resembling THEIR explanation or counter opinion to anything a Paul Bot posts.

You want to explain Why Paul or anyone else is an Idiot Clown/Hypocrite for taking Back the money that ‘Real Conservatives’ like yourself have allowed the Feral Govt to extort from them under the LIE that it was going into a Seperate Fund, which doesn’t even Exist?

It’s His Money, Genius. And it would still be His Money even if his name were John Freakin’ Kerry.

Thank God there isn’t an IQ test needed to register as a Republican, because if there was with people like you On Our Side, we’d Never win an election.
