A woman was killed by two smoke bombs flying at 150mph being used for special effects in a new TV show about military vehicles. The foot-long bombs hit Terri Flanell, 51, as the flew through the air like rockets at 150mph at a Colorado rifle range Thursday.

Sure, the smoke accident could have happened in a different context. But it happened in *this* context — a show about military hardware — because that’s the show that was being produced.
I have watched my share of such shows over the years, but now that I’m a bit older I understand how these things reveal our true interests. As an old fashioned conservative I am wondering about the social costs of a militarized culture and the glamourization of gear designed for governments investing in new ways to push people around. Conservatives used to care about stuff like that.

Personally, I find it amazing that so few accidents are reported. Even though the explosions involve paper and cardboard, the actors are not wearing eye protection or other protection and it is plainly evident that debris is flying all around them.
The same, exact thing happened to a lady on my block, except the smoke bombs were about an inch long, and they weren’t really going that fast since they kinda bounced off of her, and they didn’t hurt her or anything, but they did leave a smudge mark on her shirt. Now that I think about it, they might have actually been a couple of those black snake things you light and they kinda puff out and and twist and everything. Nevertheless, I think she was pretty lucky she didn’t end up like that other lady.

And anyhow, the scene was designed to be physically harmless to film. This was not a piece of war materiel that did what it was supposed to do.
