Russia and Poland played out a 1-1 draw in perhaps the most feared match of Euro 2012 from a security standpoint. The two countries have a long history of military invasions and occupations and supporters from both sides seemed intent on continuing those hostile relations. Prior to the match, approximately 100 fans from both sides were involved in various fights around Warsaw, resulting in 56 arrests and 10 injuries.

If only they could make Euro-football as exciting as this video!

Give Obama another term and he will allow Putin to carve up Europe any way he wants....
The faces of these girls reminds me of how surprised I was that the mix of faces on a crowded sidewalk in Moscow looked so "American". In the rest of Europe it's different. English crowds look English, Germans look German, etc. When you travel enough you can frequently ID a nationality of someone at an airport by sight, before they open their mouth and you hear the language. Not always but very often.
That thought recalls the observation of de Tocqueville that the two most similar but widely separated peoples on Earth were Americans and Russians. The comment was always a puzzle till I saw (I think) what he meant.
After WWII It talked with a German immigrant and one of the things he mentioned was that Germany had to reclaim its land. "East Germany, right?" "No, the land Poland has."
No wonder Europe has constantly been in turmoil.
I wish the score had been 5-1 - Poles beating Russia to a pulp. No nation on earth has taken more abuse than has Poland - most of it at under Russian assault.
Hundreds of thousands of fans there in Warsaw for the game, and a few skinheads do their usual crap. The vast majority of Poles and Russians at the game had a great time and enjoyed a great match.....GO POLSKA!!!!!
To the vast majority of fans at the game, all of that was ancient history, no different than a typical Florida-Georgia game. But the media has to make a big deal out of a few idiots.
Poland definetly. I can’t spell LOL
It looks like it was a lot of fun. For some at least. Evidently, the guys in red shirts are the Russians, while the guys in red shirts are the Poles.
Just wait and see what happens if Poland plays Germany.
Yeah, maybe the Russkies team up with the Poles against the Krauts!
At the begining of the match, they put the starting lineups on the TV graphics. There was a definite dearth of vowels in both the Polish and Russian names. Turned out to be a pretty good game. Looked like there was going to a bloodbath outside the stadium before the kickoff, between the fans.
Right now Poland is in third place (behind Russia and the Czech Republic) in their group. I think if they beat the Czechs they move ahead to the next round (in which case they might play Germany) but if they lose or tie they are finished. (The fourth country in the group is Greece.)
