Four years ago Barack Obama’s presidential campaign set an impressive new standard for using social media and technology to harness votes.

But this time round Obama’s campaign have raised the bar even higher and, according to experts, this advantage could make all the difference to securing a second term in office.

According to a report by Politico today, Obama’s campaign know ‘what you read and where you shop, what kind of work you do and who you count as friends. They also know who your mother voted for in the last election.’

Carried out by 150 techies this extensive data mining could give Obama the crucial edge, in what is believed to be a tight race to the White House this November.

Through Facebook, Twitter and other online sources, the campaign is working tirelessly to create a formidable data base collecting specific profiles of potential voters.

Depending on factors, such as age, interests and socio-economic levels, the campaign is able to tailor messages to these potential voters.

'They are way ahead of Romney micro-targeting and it’s a level of precision we haven’t seen before,' Darrell M. West, a leading scholar on technology innovation at the Brookings Institution, told Politico.

Unsurprisingly, the Obama campaign believes the effort and money being poured into gaining a technological advantage will pay off....

If Acxiom gets caught playing political favorites with job applications in this market, it would be their end as a corporation. That class action lawsuit would be so huge that their stockholders would never see the end of it. It would drive many voters away from Democrats and they would never see them again. They'd have to be really stupid because they will get caught when (not if) someone leaks the source code.

Although most of their offices are in Slave Party States, Acxiom U.S. locations include: Phoenix, Arizona, Ft. Myers, Florida, Starkville, Mississippi, and Memphis & Nashville, Tennessee. I am certain an injured party could find a sympathetic attorney general within those States.

Does Axciom know whether you are Democratic or Republican or Independent party affiliated?

Many years ago, I interviewed a job candidate who was employed at Acxiom.

The conversation veered off, and all the turkey wanted to talk about was the evil of Walmart (this was about 1994!). Being in Massachusetts at the time, and not yet having experienced Walmart, I rejected him, based solely on the theory that he was a nut to be so obsessed about a retail operator.

Now being a satisfied Walmart customer, I would happily reject him again, if I had the chance.

The paper is in Pleasanton, California, I believe. I saw this in David Limbaugh’s new book which I looked at in the bookstore but have not yet purchased. I don’t know if he gave an explanation of how the Obama people knew about this. Maybe somebody at the paper is a big fan of Michelle’s and alerted them.
