It seems to me that they’ve been co-opted by the hispanic caucus and, maybe GW had something to do with it.

Okay, then tell me why the GOP has gone over to supporting illegal aliens?

It's absurd to even imagine that GWB had anything to do with any of this. The issue being discussed deals with the current legislature, which last I heard didn't include GWB! Connecting him to it makes you sound as stupid as Obama!

LOL. You are funny. This story is NOT about the legislature but the GOP platform at the convention. They are giving in to the hispanic caucus whether you agree or not. Why?

By the way, GW DID want spanish spoken all through the U.S.

Did you vote for a "new America"?

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. One of my observations about Texas politics, and by extension the present governor, is that decisions involving power to politics, which in most states would be low profile, in Texas ends up big and unsubtle, as in a plank in a party platform. This is a payoff to certain business sectors in the state that have provided large cash infusions to Rick Perry.

Texans here at Free Republic brag about conservatism in their state, but there is NOTHING conservative about this: aiding and abetting the violation of Federal Immigration laws in order to reap huge profits from encouraging, employing and protecting illegal aliens.

Texas tries to put up a good front. It’s like the rancher greeting you while on his front porch, shotgun in hand, claiming he’s doing everything he can to stop the invasion, meanwhile his back gate is wide open and the dog is chained.
