Miami Beach - Miami Beach city commissioners have passed an ordinance making recycling compulsory. Effective from July 2013, hefty fines will be applied to transgressors who fail to recycle.
Local 10 reported that Miami Beach commissioners hope the new ordinance will raise awareness about recycling. Fines for those that fail to comply will increase with each violation. First offenders will be fined $350. This will rise to $500 for a second violation and $1,000 for a third violation.
Commercial recycling became mandatory for business owners in Miami-Dade County in 1992, according to Miami Dade, with fines for non-compliance ranging from $300 to $950.
According to a Fox News report, in some U.S. cities "local governments are placing computer chips in recycling bins to collect data on refuse disposal, and then fining residents who don't participate in recycling efforts and forcing others into educational programs meant to instill respect for the environment."
States which have already introduced compulsory recycling include Rhode Island, Kentucky and Nevada.

I recycle, I compost, and I insinkerate.
However , much of recycling is feel good bs.. It works for metal and paper , but much glass is unusable (colored) and gets sent to the dump , and even recyclable clear glass is not cost effective to recycle. Plastics are often not recyclable and our sewage is not renewable because of toxicity and also ends up in the dump. Just read “Garbageland”.
Maybe giant digesters will help with some of the waste.
Thankfully my town doesn’t offer curbside collection. They have the town transfer station where you can bring trash if you want for a fee.
Most resents use one of the local private contractors that does curbside collection. Pay them about $200 a year and they deliver a trash and recycle barrel on wheels. Once a week they pick up the trash and every other week recycling using the hydraulic arms. If you don’t recycle, they don’t care.
They try this crap in Texas and I’ll make sure there is a half full can of oil based paint or a car battery hidden in every load of trash.
Recycling is about as efficient as using a rickshaw for space travel.

The other problem is scavenging. If you have a lot of aluminum or items with a deposit, someone on a walk on trash pick up day may pick it up and walk off with it. In affluent communities or those with a lot of valuable material, the recyclables may be picked over or even strewn about by those looking to make money from it.
I don’t need to clean up another mess left by those who went through my recyclables. So I just toss most of it now, except for a few things I take to the metal salvage myself now.

About a few months ago I went out front to my container at the curb to add some garbage and found a small TV dumped in the wrong container. Someone must have done this during the night since our recycle containers must be put out the night before for morning pickup. This happens quite often to me with jackasses that must have overload and just park the crap in someones containers and they don’t give a damn which one to put it in.
Aren’t those grocery/Wal-Mart bags fabulous?! I feel sorry for California.
I use those bags in my bathrooms and bedrooms to line wastepaper baskets.
I carry one when I walk my dogs.
I use them to line a black (’bout a gallon) flower pot from the nursey— to pooper-scooper any pooh that I didn’t hose down quickly enough.
I use them for my yarn when I crochet— a dowel and in the bag keeps my yarn nice.
They are great for wrapping a pot if you want to carry a plant in your car—keeps the soil in and you can also wrap a seedling pot with one to keep moister and heat in during the springtime.
When I know I won’t have anyone dropping by and the mister is at work, I condition or olive oil my hair and use the bag like a heat-cap, it makes the hair ever so soft!
The bags are also nice for doing faux painting techniques.

Looking back, a University education was useful insofar as it was instructive as to what the nutcases have in store for us, I could go on for hours with great specificity on most of the nonsense being foisted on everyone today. Didn’t believe it then, but here we are...
ANYWAY, there was this real psycho espousing the virtues of sweaters made from recycled plastic soda bottles. OK, whatever, but asked “how much?”, they were like $150.00, and this was fifteen years ago. Not a bad idea, except nobody can afford them, and presumably the point of making them out of trash means they should be inexpensive, not several orders of magnitude more expensive than the equivalent. This did not go over well in class. Later, saw this same professor in a photo/newspaper story railing against the university coal plant on one of our typical -10F winter days, these people are completely nuts, they have never run a business, nor understand how to survive in the real world, it’s just insane that they should be consulted on _anything_.

They are one in the same. In the small town, under 3000, I live in we take our trash to the dump, not the recycle center like the libs call it. The town pays some outfit to sort it, burn what is not usable, and sell the good stuff i.e. copper, aluminum etc. The town gets a small fraction of the dollars from the stuff sold. A few years ago our town dump operators were doing the sorting and selling, resulting in the elimination of middle man. But the commies got elected and voted to send it to the company they sleep with, which reduced our self supporting system by 70%
You don’t have to have a stinky can, just be sure and wash out all your recyclables before they go in. I recommend using lots of extra hot soapy water. That way you can be best for the environment.
