I’m not disputing a lot of new people are registering, but turnout is not double from 2004 or 2008, both of which were years that Democrats were extremely motivated. Heck, Obama in 2008 had an amazing technology infrastructure and grassroots effort that went all the way down to keeping tabs on all individuals, and managed “only” that turnout. A bunch of goons will not double his success. It’s just not going to be the case.
I’m not going to say that Walker has it in this bag, but I’ve never seen so many obviously silly rumors come out of both sides on an Election day.
The basis for feeling that we should not feel complacent is that the unions in particular, and the Dems in general, are facing a mortal threat in Wisconsin. Public employee union membership is down around 50%, and will likely go down further as more school district contracts come up for renewal and the new legislation provisions kick in.
Expect the Dems to cheat like never before, because so much is riding on it for them.
