Defence sources said the surgical operation showed the precision, skill and courage of British special forces after they stormed the cave where Helen Johnston, 28, was held, and killed her kidnappers.
David Cameron spoke individually to the soldiers to thank them for an extraordinarily brave mission.
He warned that anyone who took British citizens hostage faced a swift and brutal end.
Miss Johnston, a committed Christian, along with Moragwa Oirere, a Kenyan colleague, and two Afghan women who worked for the same aid agency, were said to be physically well after their ordeal.
Miss Johnstons parents expressed their gratitude to the SAS and American Navy Seals from the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden, for freeing their daughter. Mr Cameron spoke to the rescued aid worker as she recovered at the British embassy in Kabul.

Just saw a reenactment of a combined SAS/SEAL mission of years back on the Military Channel yesterday. Individually, they are THE best in the world. Combined, they are super men.

While echoing everyones praise of the soldiers serving in Afghanistan, the assorted aid workers - medics, missionaries, agriculturalists and engineers are the real frontline. They are there because they are the ones who give the lie to the Talibans accusations of western crusaders and western cruelty and oppression and neo-colonialism. Thats why the Taliban go out of their way to kill or kidnap them. They are scared of our military ok, but they are REALLY scared of our aid workers, because they are the ones who have the ability to drag the country out of the sixth century. Once ordinary Afghans get used to thinking and doing for themselves, thats the end for the Islamists. And they know it.

And stiffing the Brits completely, whose operation it was.
When his tenure of office is over, we ought to airlift him to St. Helena for his retirement. And give the Brits the keys.
