A recent Yale University study funded by the National Science Foundation found that those with opposing views on climate change dont hold those views because of insufficient scientific understanding, but because of opposing sets of cultural values.
To be specific, people have a rather solid foundation in science and mathematics, but they use scientific evidence to fit their cultural groups values. In other words, global warming deniers arent stupid, they just want to fit in.
In effect, ordinary members of the public credit or dismiss scientific information on disputed issues based on whether the information strengthens or weakens their ties to others who share their values, said Dan Kahan, Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Law and Professor of Psychology at Yale Law School. At least among ordinary members of the public, individuals with higher science comprehension are even better at fitting the evidence to their group commitments.
More information can help solve the climate change conflict, Kahan said, but that information has to do more than communicate the scientific evidence. It also has to create a climate of deliberations in which no group perceives that accepting any piece of evidence is akin to betrayal of their cultural group.
So, the next time you find yourself in the company of a global warming denier or skeptic, just remember theyre under a lot of pressure, okay?
The Yale study was published yesterday in the journal Nature.

Global Warming on Free Republic
I have had a lifelong interest in science and have seen many theories come, go or change.
I remember when plate tectonics was hooted out of the classroom and the idea that an asteroid hit the Earth and doomed dinosaurs was similarly derided.
Weighing all the evidence I have seen, the “skeptics” arguments are far more compelling.
The Warming Alarmists have laid all their eggs in a carbon dioxide basket, and it seems that to blame a gas that makes up 0.039445% of our atmosphere is quite a stretch.
Fit in? FIT IN???? You have to have nerves of steel, extremely large titanium testicles, and no desire to ever receive another research grant to be a "denier". (note the derogatory term reserved for those on only one side of the issue, and the more open-minded side at that)
Oxygen theives!
So the scrambling begins to negate all the counter-AGW evidence that's been emerging (and that they probably know even better than we that WILL be emerging). They need a strategy in place to try to keep the whole thing from coming down around their heads.
