Call it the return of the Reichsfluchtsteuer.

....

“I think Schumer can probably find the legislation to do this. It existed in Germany in the 1930s and Rhodesia in the ‘70s and in South Africa as well,” Norquist said. “He probably just plagiarized it and translated it from the original German.”

The Reichsfluchsteuer, or Reich flight tax, that German government imposed on Jews trying to flee in the 1930s was 25 percent; Schumer and his Senate colleague Bob Casey, Democrat of Pennsylvania, want 30 percent. Give Schumer some credit for creativity.

According to Norquist, the New Yorker did not just plagiarize and translate. He also raised the rate. ....

Right; a Reichsfluchsteuer would be something like the Reich’s cussing tax…

“Countries with exit controls are most often full police states, devoid of freedom”

Yep. Makes you wonder why the govt is constructing more and more border patrol stations along the Canadian border. At what point is The Frasier Valley in BC going to look like freedom? We have been thinking maybe we need a “vacation home” there. As soon as we get the back taxes paid up. LOL!

I believe that within 1 to 5 years, my comment, above, will get me detained and shipped somewhere for 're-education'. Seriously.

You can have the bunk between me and Ted Nugent.

Cant feel much sympathy if the get clipped by a 30% tax on the way out.

...unless/until it's YOU deciding it's time to jump ship because your values are declared illegal & actionable, and the fruit of your labor is confiscated to empower the elite & lazy, and whatever change could persuade you leaving is better than complying or revolting.

Like the "papers, please" catch phrase once code for oppression and now an accepted patriotic demand, "30% exit tax" is a sure sign a nation is moving toward hardcore totalitarianism. It may not affect you per se, but is a warning that something wicked this way comes.

Leaving for money is as American as apple pie. However, dodging the draft meant some other guy had to take your place in line.

Eventually we have to round up the draft dodgers and give them another place in line ~ then........

Envy is also identified as a vice in Aristotle's Ethics ... in a beautifully simple way.

I'm of the opinion that Aristotle's Ethics is more on-target-right than people realize.

Our Huguenot ancestors had to give up their property and every type of wealth to the King of France in order to leave.

Sometimes that wasn't enough and he went ahead and killed them, or stole their children to give to Roman Catholic priests to raise as their own.

Anything that smacks of forcing people to give up their belongings to leave the country stinks of Louis XIV ~ the very tyrant the Bill of Rights was about.

Traitors renounce their citizenship and leave the USA..

That might make a person a quitter but it certainly does not define them as traitor.

I will never renounce nor consider renouncing my American citizenship. I have nothing but contempt for those that renounce their citizenship for whatever reason.

Being able to take your ball and find a new home is freedom.
Having the team confiscate your ball in the process isn’t.
A simple concept.

“Being able to take your ball and find a new home is freedom”

I spend alot of time out of the USA in mostly 3rd world countries because I find I have more personal freedom in those countries than I have in the United States. But I am an American first, last and always will be.

If someone renounces their citizenship they are by definition no longer an American. They can be a free spirit or what ever but they are not Americans.

They also require national IDs, and seek means of dramatic population reduction. Alas, some on this forum are cool with these too.

What really stood out to me when reading all the scriptures on envy is this: (I knew this but had forgotten)

Envy is THE reason that the Jews gave up Christ for crucifixion.

” This is simply the establishment of a financial Berlin Wall. We start with the rich, then the word ‘rich’ is defined down to capture you and me.”

Nailed it.

I'm expecting we will finally get that wall

For some time I've pointed out that walls stop movement in _both_ directions. Few FReepers understood.

” An exit visa renders your passport meaningless and will prevent you from traveling until you satisfy certain conditions and obtain (pay fees to boot) permits and approval stamps from a number of departments that may take months if successful.”

This will hurt trade to no end.

What if the tax were 50%? 60%? 80%? There comes a tipping point. Maybe different for you than for me.

The next logical/historical step is to remove “renounces citizenship” from the restriction. ANY attempt to move non-trivial sums out of the country will be taxed at confiscatory rates.

You don’t think they expect to implement the full plan all at once, do you? They legislate what they can manage to enact, get that accepted as the norm, then take another step.

” The speaker of the House, John Boehner, a Republican, told ABC News’ “This Week” that Saverin’s exit from America was “outrageous” and that he would support Schumer’s legislation if it is necessary to prevent people from leaving America to avoid taxes. “

Remove this insipid dolt!

“What if the tax were 50%? 60%? 80%”

I like all of our vets and men and women serving in uniform were prepared to give 100% before ever renouncing their American citizenship.

I simply cant relate to folks who have a tipping point. I'm an American first and damn proud of it. Those who have a price on their American citizenship are traitors in the making.
