A Laura Zimmerman attacked on the street in this manner would have been described as “she and Martin were in a loud and bloody fight in the moments leading up to the shooting.”? I doubt it.

I agree with most of your points, but self-defense is an affirmative defense, so he actually does need to prove it. Not to the same evidentiary burden as the prosecution must meet, but he does have to make the case.
