And Jesus did not know that he was speaking to a soldier when he told him to do no murder and be satisfied with his wages?
Killing and murder are not the same thing when it comes to soldiering...if that were the case, Christ would have told the soldier to desert his ranks and become a pacifist.
As for the wages, the dictators of the time already knew that in order to keep their armies in line and loyal to them, they had to keep promising them ever larger wages and larger percentages of spoils and slaves captured. Poorly paid soldiers were often tempted (and did,) in certain circumstances to commit war crimes(real murder) to supplement their incomes and often their officers would over look such atrocities(especially if the officers got a share of the loot.) That is what Christ was referring to and I think he had a real bead on what those soldiers may have been up to, or perhaps a bead on something they had been planning!
