(WMC-TV) – The Mississippi Highway Patrol is warning drivers to be cautious while being pulled over as they investigate two deadly highway shootings.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol's Bureau of Investigation said there are similarities between both incidents.
"The concern is that someone is posing as a law enforcement officer and that is how these vehicles end up on the side of the road," said MBI Director Lt. Col. Larry Waggoner in a written statement.
Both deadly shootings happened on Mississippi highways.
"I know there are a lot of rumors. We don't know anything right now that is concrete. Due to some of the evidence at the scene, lead us to believe both subjects that were killed were on the side of the road. You can speculate about different things. We are not eliminating anything as a possibility on how they got on the side of the road," said John Champion, district attorney.
On May 8, Thomas Schlender, 74, of Raymond, Nebraska, was found dead in his car on Interstate 55 in Panola County. On May 11, Lori Anne Carswell, 48, of Hernando, was found dead in her car on Mississippi Highway 713 in Tunica County. Both shootings happened in the early morning hours.
The victims did not know each other and the shootings happened 55 miles apart.
The Tate County Sheriff's Office posted a warning for drivers on their Facebook page:
"If someone attempts to pull you over with flashing lights and you feel unsure of stopping, DON'T PULL OVER. Use your cell phone and dial 911 and if it's a real officer then the dispatcher will confirm it for you and if it's not a real officer they will send help to you."
They also said their deputies have been told not to overreact if someone does not immediately pull over.
DeSoto County also issued the same warning and is ceasing the use of all the county's unmarked patrol cars.
A reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case. Anyone with information can contact 1-888-8CRIMES.
The badge-lickers will tell you failure to submit instantly is signing your death warrant. Hope Mississippi nails this fast before people are shot.

Since there are real world cases of legitimate police harming or killing, as happened in San Diego back in 1986, it makes even less sense to stop for an unmarked vehicle.
I was surprised to see one in TN some weeks ago; I hadn't noticed them in CA. I realize TN law still requires you to stop for unmarked vehicles but allows you the right to keep moving to the next public area. That still strikes me as a poor policy. Mark the traffic enforcement vehicles and be done with it.

A few years back, we worried about the “Lights Out” killers. Gang members would drive with their lights out at night and when another driver flashed his lights to try to let them know they were running dark, that driver became the victim.
We live in North Mississippi & that IS a true statement!
Here in Arizona unmarked pull people over. I for one will not. This how Ken Bianchi of hill side strangler fame was able to get some of his victims.
Be careful going into Millington, speed trap deluxe, especially now with the money crunch and the putting in of a new exist ramp. Blue lights all over the place.

You have that right. I live on the fringes of Memphis, between Raleigh and Frayser, out near the new Niki plant. Neighbor hood is being impacted by OUT SIDE forces with home robberies in the drive ways, smash and grabs from cars. They are youths with an older mentor, do it, and on foot or regular bikes. LOL, to stupid to even drop the loot.
Neighborhood is quiet except for this going on, we installed an up graded home alarm, and make sure the 12 gauge is where we can get it, as we are older, and move slower, it was the wisest choice of weapon....dead bolts on bdrm doors and attic, plus easy access to roof windows if need be.
Neither of us is afraid to use the weapon. Hubby is Ret. Senior Chief, I CCW a Tauraus Ultra Lite revolver. 12 gauge is street legal, with the shortest barrel and a pistol grip. And at my being only 5 ft I only have to draw it to center mass and aim my body. Even with out my glasses I am not likely to miss. And my CCW instructor an former LEO said to empty the chamber. I do as instructed per with my weapons. Including locking them up in the gun safe when the small grands and great grands are around.
Any congress critter or president who FAILS to keep faith with the Military, WON’T keep faith with you.

And then get ticketed for driving while talking on your cellular phone.
I grew up in the sixties in eastern Arkansas. I had an aunt and uncle who lived in Raleigh. At the time we thought they were rich because of the nice neighborhood. How long before “it” gets to Bartlett? When is the fence going to be built around Germantown?
It will go to Memphis if at all, Bartlett could be next, Cordova is safe because they have to build a bridge out there for now, and Memphis can’t afford to.
Lots of nice homes in Scenic Hills, professional people, every one keeps their yards up. But you can’t sell them worth spit. We have 3,800 sq ft and couldn’t get $125 out of it. 4 Bdrooms, 3 baths, 2 dens, galley kitchen, formal living room, dinning room, plus a wash/dryer room and a large attic, 2 of the bdrooms are considered Master’s as it had a second floor built on. But it is 45 years old, paid for and of course lead paint no one ones to deal with. Then you have a front hill and a back hill, no usable yard space, except the drive way. Car port has been turned into a closed garage for 2 cars. Plus it has a hot tub room.
