Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday released his plan to contain California's rapidly growing deficit by closing state offices one day a week, deepening healthcare cuts and implementing a variety of short-term fixes -- all in the hope that voters give the state more breathing room by approving higher taxes in November.
Brown warned that the deficit could grow significantly if his proposed ballot measure to raise the state sales tax and income levies on high earners fails. He says that would trigger severe cuts in public education that would be the equivalent of lopping three weeks off the school year.
"I'm linking these serious budget reductions with a plea to the voters: Please increase taxes temporarily," Brown said at a morning news conference to announce his revised plan for the budget year that begins July 1.
California's deficit has swelled to nearly $16 billion, the governor said almost double what he assumed in his initial budget proposal in January. The shortfall is a result of lower-than-projected tax receipts, an increase in school money under a voter-approved funding formula and opposition to cuts from the federal government, courts and Democratic state lawmakers.

I love that they’re making cuts on the Court system.
Makes it much more likely that anay parking tickets that I conest will be dismissed...
Kalipornia is run by insane people
CA already has some of the highest income, sales, auto and property taxes(even with prop 13)...no one seems to ask the question of why the state manages to spend more than other states in terms of those taxes.
We ourselves are about taxed out..we had the real estate people in last week to do a comp on selling our house and leaving. We could have twice the house at a third the price and more money in the bank..

Somewhere at the link it was mentioned that all but one of Newport Beach’s public lifeguards make over $100k a year (some almost $200k, total comp.).
Jerry: More taxes, pleeeease? Temporarily, if you don’t mind too much.
The biggest lies in American life.
1.) The check’s in the mail
2.) I promise not to **** in your mouth
3.) It’s a temporary tax
what’s the problem??? this should be an easy fix...
1) California is full of hollywood liberal elites- the same clowns who support the squatter movement that hates the 1%...
2) these hollywood elites make $5mill/$10mill/$15mill/$20mill (hanks, spielberg, the two bozos from assachussettes) a movie...
3) Califronia is run by liberals who feel the rich are not paying their fair share and that the only way to get the deficit down is increase taxes on the rich...
4) c’mon Jerry Brown!!! c’mon hollywood liberal elite...TAX THE RICH NOW!!!! impose a 50% state income tax fee on anyone making more than $5million annually....let the liberal hollywood elite put their money where their mouths are...let the far left politicians in California prove that raising taxes will cut deficits!!!
if i am the GOP, Hannity, Limbaugh i am talking about this day after day, mocking hollywood to pony up and save their state!!!
When they say “tax the rich” they mean tax everyone else but them. That is the dirty, rotten, stinking little secret that Liberals don't want you to know.
Although I'm not for taxing the "rich"...as I'm in the 5% ( And I ain't rich....).
I'd just like to see the Lib's exposed........
Tax the rich more so California can pay the overblown pensions of retired state workers. That doesn’t make any sense. You’re nuts Jerry Brown.
Sell all state owned buildings and land to Walmart, etc and then set up tents.
These Rats drive down education to the dumps, give illegals more rights and more cash than Citizens, continue to bleed money from any productive citizen, and then they expect this? Really?
How about increasing the taxes on the people who haven’t been paying any, and decrease taxes on those that have been paying a lot ?
Decrease the sales tax rate to 4%, but extend it to rents, groceries, and services — none of those are subject to sales tax now and that makes government cheap to millions of Californians. That step alone would close the $16b Budget Deficit because the lower rate would apply to 90% of consumption instead of the 25% it applies to now.
“Please increase taxes temporarily,” Brown said. He then laughed and said to his aides, “What is a temporary tax? These Brain Dead MORONS would buy the BROOKLYN BRIDGE if I offered it to them.”
Meanwhile, in Utah the GOP said, “Califoria companies...please move to Utah!!”
LLS
Same thing with temporary taxes. There will be waste and new deficits, and the temporary tax will be extended and then made permanent. Spread the word to young people to not be fooled!
Jerry, when are you going to figure out your state doesn’t have a taxing problem, it has a spending problem.
-—Jerry, when are you going to figure out your state doesnt have a taxing problem, it has a spending problem-—
That’s a rhetorical question, isn’t it?
