Even though his administration announced a year ago that it considered the Defense of Marriage Act, defining marriage as between one man and one woman, to be constitutionally indefensible, he now says (correctly) that whether to permit same-sex marriage is a state matter. He can't now go beyond that now, for political reasons. However, if he is reelected and has the four years of flexibility it entails, he is likely, as urged by the Washington Post and doubtless by his other admirers, to use executive orders in defiance of the Congress and the courts, to do as he pleases.
