Of all the flights I’ve taken, the spookiest was Ely, NV to Elko, NV. Shake, rattle and roll over the mountains (through the pass in the Ruby Mnts). One year after I left the mine near Carlin, a friend of mine broke his ankle in a very lucky crash during a too low decent into Elko. Twelve passenger metro liners as I recall.

The crash in Indonesia is quite tragic. It sure sounds like pilot error.

Your buddy is one lucky fool....

“January 16, 1990

A commuter plane crashed while trying to land in a snowstorm today, injuring all 16 people on board, officials said.

But most of the passengers walked away from the crash. Four people, including the captain, were admitted to Elko General Hospital, and 12 others were treated and released, a nursing supervisor said. All four of those hospitalized were in fair condition.

Federal Aviation Administration officials said the plane, SkyWest Flight 5855, was flying from Salt Lake City to Elko when it crashed about 9:30 A.M. west of the airport in this town of 8,800 people in northeastern Nevada.

The wreckage was spotted by a helicopter pilot who returned to Elko to fly medical personnel to the scene and to airlift the most seriously injured to the hospital.

No one aboard had been thrown from the plane and the fuselage of the aircraft was intact on the northeastern face of the mountain, said Pete Schory of Salt Lake City, one of the rescuers.”

We always drove from Ely to Elko. Didn’t know anyone flew. SLC to Ely on some “mail carrier” was an “experience” as well, probably lucky it was not ScareWest.

Best thing about flying into Elko it landed coming low over the Stockman’s and could get a glimps of the Star and thinking of dinner, yummie. Star definately the best Basque although Nevada Dinner House was a close 2nd, Biltoki once was enough.
