They also start thinking we elected THEM personally. Who we elect are representatives of OUR viewpoints. We find the candidate who most closely matches our beliefs and desires (sadly, it’s often just lip service) and we send that person to represent US in government. They forget they’re only there to do OUR bidding.

By “they” I assume you mean Republicans? Because Democrats have no issue retaining their strong partisan identities and Liberal ideologies. It’s only GOPers like Lugar who feel compelled to moderate for the sake of bipartisanship. Dems like Schumer, Reid, Durbin, Boxer never do.
