If Indiana Senator Dick Lugar loses his Republican primary race to Tea Party challenger Richard Mourdock tonight, as polls indicate is likely, his defeat will signal the end of moderate Republican internationalism in the US Senate and the GOP more broadly.
Lugar, a two time chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee best known for his work on arms control and nonproliferation treaties, used to be one of the GOPs leading figures on foreign policy. Now hes an outlier.
The Senate Republican caucus was once filled with the likes of Dick Lugarsensible realists such as Lincoln Chafee, Chuck Hagel, George Voinovich and Olympia Snowe. Now theyre all gone or going, casualties of a Republican party where diplomacy, multilateralism and bipartisanship are dirty words. (A Mourdock ad called Lugar Obamas favorite Republican.)

Lugar thought this was going to be NO CONTEST.
He’s had to dump something like $4.5 MILLION at the last minute, compared to Mourdock’s $2 Mil.
If Mourdock wins, THANK SARAH PALIN, because it will be her endorsement that is responsible for it.
If ever a post deserved a BARF Alert, this one sure does (I know ti;s the Nation). Lamenting the loss of Chuck Hagel and Lincoln Chaffee and now Dick Lugar
“moderate Republican internationalism”
I see nothing wrong with this at all. Moderation does not mean real moderation, but a willingness to join with radical leftists across the isle against his own party.
Internationalism is just foul. Elected officials of the United States are not elected to represent the world, but part of our nation.
Leftism and leftist political parties around the world are tied up with, and even openly affiliated with the Socialist International.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_International
This means that they are openly and unabashedly disloyal to their respective nations, in favor of a theoretical international world government. It would not be unreasonable that they be banned from holding elective office for this not just absence of patriotism, but *opposition* to patriotism.
The Socialist Party of America announced in their October 2009 newsletter that 70 Congressional Democrats currently belong to their caucus.
That they belong to this anti-American organization is enough that they be removed from office. And if senator Lugar is sympathetic to this internationalist cause, then he should be removed from office as well.
This is not a casual association, but should disqualify people for holding elective or appointive office in the United States. It is an admission of treasonous conspiracy against the constitution and the people of the United States.
About time the Senate gets some R’s with a spine...more Jesse Helms and less Lugars will be needed to horse whip Romney when he strays!
The article implies we’re making progress.
There is always going to be a "most liberal Republican Representative" or a "seventh most liberal GOP Senator" no matter how conservative the party is. Lugar's no Jacob Javits or John Lindsay, no Mark Hatfield or Edward Brooke. He's only slightly more liberal than a lot of other Republican Senators. His biggest fault: living too long and staying in office too long.
Obama's Dinner.
Awww boo hoo... Somebody throw that liberal/DemocRAT writer a towel to cry on. And after that give him a pacifier.
It’s like these socialist live on a different planet or are just brainwashed fascists.....
Bingo.
Indianapolis Star Political Reporter Beth Schnieder tweeted that Mourdock has already received a congratulatory call from a US Senator (unnamed) about an hour ago!!
I wonder if it ever occurred to this bonehead that John Kennedy would be a conservative Republican by todays standards, that is how far LEFT everything has shifted politically.
“Moderate” in liberal speak means “leftest liberal” in Conservative speak.
Isn’t it interesting how, every couple of years, liberals who couldn’t normally identify a Republican without a blueprint, suddenly become not only experts on Republican primary races but advisors to GOP primary voters?
Methinks their advice lacks credibility for some reason ...
Democrats only vote lock-step with the Democrat leadership, for fear of losing reelection funding.
