When you were burning 6000 calories a day doing farm work, that was one thing. When you get up, commute to work, sit at a desk, come home, watch sports on TV, you burn maybe 1200-1500 calories a day. Keep the eating habits that are still part of the culture from the time when people did serious manual labor every day, and obesity follows.
