You have to love the ‘mis-typed’ zip code scenario. Another ‘dog ate the homework’ excuse.
Also remember the O’Reilly stated unequivocally that the reason for the CT SS number was that father Obama applied for it while at Harvard.
Of course what O’Reilly said was completely wrong for many reasons. But it shows the ‘excuses’ were varied on this until they found this one.
The zip code theory was born from Fogbow on their forum. No basis in fact. They just all agreed it would be ‘the story’ going forward.

From above:
“Most likely, this was due to a clerical error. At the time, President Obama was only 15 years old, and lived with his grandparents in an address on Beretania Street. The Presidents house in Hawaii was in zip code 96814 and the zip code for Danbury, CT. is 06814. Since the ‘0’ and ‘9’ on a typical typewriter are immediately adjacent (remember, the president’s Social Security number was issued in 1977, before the age of computers), it would have been a common error to accidently type a ‘0’ when the ZIP code really began with a ‘9’. Another possibility is that President Obama, a left-handed 15 year old boy at the time, may have written his own ZIP code in a less-than-fully-legible manner, making the ‘9’ look somewhat like an ‘0’.”
January 5, 2011 is when this theory came to life.

“Am I right in thinking that the typo hypothesis would be supported by any Zip code that begins with 960- through 969-, corresponding to CT’s range of 060-/069-? And aren’t all HA Zip codes in the 967-/968- range?
If that’s the case, why is Orly making a stink about a specific 5-digit code?
Edited to add:
In other words, wouldn’t any HA Zip code turn into a CT Zip code if the initial “9” (which they all have) were misread as a “0”?”
Everything on this theory comes from this January 5, 2011 post....
IIRC, and I am 56 years old, I had to present a copy of my BC and to fill out a form with my address. I did this at the SSA office in Boston. The card was issued on the spot. The only cards in that office would have only the regional code for that office. There can not be a clerical mistake. In fact IIRC we used to use just the last two digits of the zip code back then. I lived in Malden MA and I would of wrote 48 for my zip code. The zip code was irrelevant!
The wrong zip code theory doesn’t fly.
They had to mail him the SS card. With wrong zip in the 70’s it would be returned to sender.
