INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican Sen. Richard Lugar is asking Democrats and independents to cross party lines and save him next week in the political fight of his life.
The six-term senator said Friday he needs votes from outside his own party if he is to survive Tuesday's GOP primary. Recent polling has shown Lugar trailing tea party-backed state Treasurer Richard Mourdock.
Lugar told reporters he is best suited to represent Jewish and female Hoosiers along with ethnic minorities.

You’ve nailed it. Lugar has coasted for so many years that he’s forgotten how to campaign. He’s also surrounded by a senior staff who have been with him for 20-plus years. That, btw, speaks well of him as a senator and a boss; he’s a gentleman, not one of the jerks. As he’s aged, he’s also burrowed more and more into the Foreign Relations Committee, which is fine except that it does nothing for him politically.
George Bush should probably have made him Secretary of State and let someone a generation younger take the seat.

Still, Romney couldn’t win on his own. He got all these same limp-wristed people behind him, then decimated his opponents with money to get ahead. And I’ve no doubt that he was behind the Cain business and that he was manufacturing votes in the big cities in the industrial states to push him over the top.

True.. He seems like someone who has a lot of personal class. But he's had some judgment breakdowns, the greatest of which in recent years was that "aye" vote he cast for ratification of "New START" during the nightmarish two months of the 2010 lame-duck session.

I am convinced now - more than ever - that there should never be such a thing as a 'six-term Senator'... of any party. Shoulda been max'd out at two terms... and maybe three for the House.
