Only when I know someone is trying very hard to hide something, or gives me some other good reason to hold them in suspicion.

Meh. Maybe he isn’t, I really have no way of knowing, and I don’t care that much. I still don’t buy that these “diary excerpts” were written 30 years ago and quoted verbatim. The basic facts might be true, but I’d wager money that what we are reading is a “dramatic reenactment” of any actual diary the young lady may have kept.
