Because their parent(s) suck by not being parents who provide love and boundaries, thus, leaving it wide open for the gang bangers to fill that hole with “respect” and a pseudo love.
Sometimes the “Mother and Dad” are very young themselves and haven't a clue as to how to raise a child - a child that ends up in gangs & thuggery and prisons. Maybe “parents” weren't even parented well.
When you have generations of thuggery, what can anyone expect...
