No, no personal experience. I'm purely straight. It's a combination of things. This particular area of Texas has had a gay community for a long time. I got hit on as a teen by a gay man way back in 1977. It opened my eyes about the world around me for sure.
I was also exposed to the gay community while in the Navy at San Diego during the early 80's.
You didn't want to go to Balboa Park alone. The gays had started roaming in packs and many were very...confrontational...shall we say if you looked askance at them.
