President Barack Obama made a previously unannounced visit to Afghanistan on Tuesday, the first anniversary of the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden in neighboring Pakistan.
The president will make a televised address from Afghanistan at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The trip was Obama's third to Afghanistan since taking office. He visited in March 2010 and returned in December of the same year. He also visited Afghanistan in 2008 as a presidential candidate.
Tuesday's visit came at a particularly delicate time in relations between the United States and Afghanistan. The countries have been negotiating a strategic agreement that would outline the basis for U.S.-Afghan cooperation after most U.S. and allied troops withdraw in 2014.

Well said Navy Vet, this AF Vet salutes you. Very good point about how long it takes to develop an operation. My support activities for special ops and Army operations (to some degree for routine operations as well) validate that. These preparations were impressive, detailed, and relentlessly drilled.
Of course they were. Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, Marine Recon, Air Force combat ground air controllers train and train and train. The only variable in the bin Laden operation was if bambi would allow it to happen.
From what I understand, the orders were in place long before bambi soiled the Oval Office, and the aforementioned intel people in my earlier post were working their ass off to find him.
I read so often on this forum how incompetent our intelligence services are. Do people actually believe that the DOD, CIA, NSA, and others were not looking for bin Laden with all their might?
Unfortunately, with our intel agencies and military services not being able to scour every foot of Aftcrapistan previously and than Osama hiding in Pakistan, it's no wonder to me it took this long to find him (but think of all the others we found). Hell, I could hide out in the mountains of the Northwest and not be found possibly forever.
The above hard-working professionals DID find him and my SEAL shipmates turned him into pink mist. I just wish we had given him the pig burial he deserved, instead of honors at sea. Bet there's a bunch of sailors and Marines (always Marines on Big Decks)that are pissed about that. Some day, one or more will talk once they believe they and family are no longer in jeopardy. I find that chapter of al-Queda very disturbing, although I understand the need for no memorial. Maybe I'm wrong and it was for the best.
Obama is a POS for continuing to take credit. A real leader would always say "our" instead of "I" or "me".
From what I’ve read in the last two days, the troops were not even allowed in when he was there for the speech, and meeting with Afghan officials! The newspeople said not even the troops were allowed in! Now maybe he did visit with them, but I haven’t even seen any pictures of him meeting with them!
